Known as the oldest tertiary schooling establishment in the country, the University of Hong Kong is a government university established in the year 1911. The university officially opened its doors on 11th March 1912, offering study programs in the fields of medicine, arts, and engineering. In 1916, the university held its first assemblage with 23 graduates in total, and it started to enroll female students a decade after its foundation. After 1945, the university underwent post-war reconstruction to rebuild its campus. Additionally, Queen Mary Hospital has been the official teaching hospital of the university since 1937. Presently, HKU has earned worldwide appreciations for its achievements as a research-based university.
Nestled in Lung Fu Shan, Hong Kong, the university's chief campus has a central location with easy accessibility. HKU Station, which serves as the principal transport access point to the university inaugurated in the year 2014 and is near to the campus. The university's main campus that was created in the post-renaissance style has two courtyards and several other facilities. In 1984, it became a part of the declared monument list. The university also has a museum and art gallery, which houses several artifacts and collections. Commercial and non-commercial filming is permitted on the campus of the university.
Every year HKU welcomes several international students from different countries across the globe. In 2018, the university had 4,244 international students and 1,548 visiting students in the year 2017. Furthermore, the university's graduate employment rates have always been high and impressive. In the academic session of 2017, nearly 100% of undergraduate students received employment. The University of Hong Kong offers a plethora of scholarship opportunities for students to help them with financials. Some of these scholarships are Academic Elite Scholarship in Nursing, Aedas Travelling Scholarships, AGS Scholarship, and InterCham Scholarship Fund.
HKU is home to several distinguished alumni who are leading successful careers in their respective fields. One of the most known alumni of the university is Dr. Sun Yat-sen, who was the founder of the Republic of China. Additionally, the university organizes reunions periodically to maintain strong ties with its alumni. The alumni base of the university is spread widely across the globe, where approximately 9,700 alumni reside in America and 27,000 alumni in Europe.
