So, before getting on to SOP samples, you MUST check your university and course-specific SOP writing requirements. Fulfilling these requirements is essential not to get rejected in the first phase of the application check.
SOP Format and SOP Template
To begin with, the statement of purpose template, there are a few simple points to remember. An SOP includes multiple aspects, important points and things which must not be missed. Ensure to keep them on your SOP Review Checklist:
- Statement of Purpose follows a paragraph format and abides by the general rules associated with essay writing. While using bullets is accepted, they must be avoided and kept to a bare minimum.
- Unless otherwise stated, a standard statement of purpose should be no more than two pages long, single-spaced, and utilise a font size no larger than 12 points.
- There should be no use of colourful text or images anywhere. The font colour should be plain black (not even grey).
- Apart from the obvious, there are simple templates for presenting your statement of purpose. Ideally, a Statement of Purpose should have about 5-7 paragraphs of about 150 to 250 words each.
To understand these instructions, it is important to go through a couple of SOP samples. Below is a simple SOP template with a paragraph-wise explanation of the SOP Format.
Statement of Purpose Format
You can create your SOP more easily using a basic Statement of Purpose template comprising many logically connected sections. A statement of purpose consists of paragraphs organized into headings for easy reading. You may determine which paragraph contains what by looking at these headings. Once your SOP is finished, you must check that each paragraph covers all the important details coherently. This is how a basic SOP template would look.
When working on your SOP, always have the following format in mind. After having your sample statement of purpose, make sure that your SOP includes the following:
- Say "Hello!" or "Namaste!" Start a conversation by describing what drives you, along with your interest in the particular field of application.
- You should highlight your educational background and any publication or academic achievements relevant to the application.
- List your academic and professional goals, both in the short and in the long term. What are your expectations from this program, and how does this program fit into your career strategy?
- Explain why you choose this specific program.
- Explain why you have chosen this university and how the program can assist you in the achievement of your goals.
- Emphasize your skills and strengths and link them to the specific program you're applying for.
- Mention any personal qualities that set you apart from other potential applicants for this particular program.
- After you have conducted research on several institutions and have shortlisted some colleges and universities
- End with a statement of mission.
Walkthrough of each point on the sample SOP format:
Paragraph 1:
Introduction & Goals
This paper This introduction to SOP must discuss the life goals you have in this domain. Sometimes, this can be made more interesting with an example/analogies, but do not go overboard on the objective. It is always best to mention the motivation you have for taking up the course right from the beginning. This is essentially the goal-setting essay for MBA admission that is common.
Paragraph 2 & 3:
Career Advancement This is where you usually introduce yourself. You need to give a short introduction and trace your journey from school to college. The most likely focus of Paragraph 2 is academics, and this introduces Paragraph 3, which moves to your working experience and how to write about your career progression. But if you’re applying straight from college, you could dedicate Paragraph 2 to your academics and Paragraph 3 to your extra-curriculars, or modify it according to your requirement.
Paragraph 4: Why?
This is the most significant part of your SOP, as it offers the rationale for the action you'd wish to perform. It will be more interesting if you can tell the story of an occasion that motivated you to do this or marked a significant turn in your life. The more passion and expression this paragraph has, the better your essay will be. For instance, while writing the SOP for a Master's in Economics, you need to make sure your reasons for taking up the subject and your objectives regarding earning this degree are explicitly stated.
Paragraph 5: How do you Plan to Achieve your Goal?
Your SOP now concludes. So far, you have spoken about your goals, the manner in which you decided upon them, and also why you chose this particular course. Talk about how you wish to achieve your goals. Write it if you want to do research. Write it if you want to work at a particular company. This further shows that you have thought out your life in detail. Give timelines to it too. For example, I will work in the industry for two years before I start my research program.
Check out the Common Mistakes to Avoid in an SOP.
NOTE: It is not necessary that the information should be presented in the manner suggested in this sample SOP format. It is one of the many possible ways of presenting your statement of purpose. However you may want to narrate the story, just remember that it needs to come together and integrate.

If you are interested in having a look at country-specific SOPsamples, you may look at examples from some popular countries.
Statement of Purpose Format - Important Points:
The most important points that you often end up missing in SOPs are as follows:
- Career Goals: Writing that you have a childhood inclination toward a certain field would not strengthen your SOP. You should always be able to explain what you aim to do in life by gaining knowledge in that field.
- How the University would help achieve them: Why do you want to join a particular university and how it would help you achieve your career goals are equally important. Writing that you are interested in joining a university abroad due to its location or infrastructure would not help.
- Logic and Reason: Make sure that your academic background, professional experience, reasons to pursue a course, reasons to opt for a particular university and career goals are tied by logic and reason. Do not mention random events that do not fit the context. The admissions committee should not get confused while reading your SOP.
- Flow: There needs to be coherence and flow in your writing. One idea must be connected to another one seamlessly.
- Research the University: Make sure to research the university, its facilities, the faculty, and the course you are applying for, any ongoing research, vision and mission statement, and such. This exercise will provide excellent points that can be mentioned in support of your reasons for pursuing a particular course at a particular university.
Quick Tip: When taking the reference from a sample, you should never copy the words. Instead, look at how the writer has connected their background to the program, justified their goals, and what university-specific elements they included. Then, you should try and connect your motivation and goals to the university.
