The most common question for MBA programs is the ‘Career Progression’ or the ‘Career Path Essay’, which is required by universities abroad. These essays are not restricted to MBA programs; many universities ask for a career progression essay for MS programs related to management courses, as well. The word limit can be different for different courses and universities. There can also be different versions of the same question, worded in another way. The student must not make the mistake of repeating his/her resume, in paragraph form, or treat this as a Statement of Purpose (SOP). However, the applicant may treat the career path essay as a bit of both.
What does the career path essay entail?
A career progression essay or a career path essay documents your professional journey, how you progressed to your current role, and your learning on the way. Moreover, unless asked, a career path essay may not talk about your future career goals. This is because the universities mostly have separate goals essay questions. Therefore, discussing your future goals will make it repetitive, which should be avoided. The university may not ask you directly to discuss your career progression but may club the question with your intended contribution to the university, or how you may use the MBA program to attain your future career goals.

How to Approach the Career Progression/Career Path Essay
- Taking into consideration the word limit specified, the applicant should abstain from including every career step in detail. There may be some transition or intermediary stages, which can be referred to as a transition in the career.
- The main focus should be on learning from each step, rather than what the step was. For instance: Managing a team at TCS helped me further improve my communication skills. As I handled the constant reporting of 15 engineers working on the same project, I quickly assimilated the habit of constant reporting and feedback.
- You may suggest the stages which helped you decide your career goals. Example: Working as a Project Manager, I was constantly coordinating with other teams. Collaborating across domains, I realized that while my technical skillset was sound, my understanding of the functional domains still needs a lot of work.
- The applicant must demonstrate the career progression as a progression of the personality and not just job responsibilities. Example: Working onsite in the UK was a great opportunity for me. I was able to further improve my ability to adapt. It also helped me to improve my communication skills.
- In case of an unusual or unique career path, the applicant must give a convincing and logical explanation for his choice.
The above tips can help you write an effective career progression/ career path essay. You must also express your thoughts fluidly and comprehensively. Try to avoid cliché statements and jargon. Most importantly, you must revise your draft and avoid any kind of grammatical error, or copying from the internet.
