Computing and Information Technology - BSc (Hons) - Batch of 2023
4.0
The college is in the heart of city.
Tips: Birmingham City University offers a diverse culture of many different courses, and cultures from around the world. Known for its excellent courses and strong industry connections, It provides practical career-focused education. The vibrant student community is something that makes student life fun. Students should explore various clubs, events and activities and be a part of them.
Likes (Indian Food): There are many different kinds of restaurants available in the locality serving world cuisines at an affordable rate for the students on campus. I usually prefer cooking myself as I'm a vegetarian but there are few veg options available as well, so sometimes I do try those.
Dislikes (Value for money): The course fee is justified and everything around the campus, facilities provided for students, staff support, and everything adds up to make it a value-for-money decision. There are also scholarships available for students coming from an international background.

BSc in Cyber Security - Batch of 2027

My Cyber Security Experience at Birmingham City University: Learning and Student Life
Tips: I’m in my final year of BSc (Hons) Cyber Security at Birmingham City University, and I’ve enjoyed it. We cover networking, security operations, digital forensics, cryptography and software security, and the course balances theory with hands-on work better than I expected. If you’re a technical student, don’t rely on lectures alone. That was the biggest lesson for me. The people who do well tend to be the ones practising in their own time and building small projects, not the ones who only show up and take notes. I work part-time to pay for tuition, travel and university activities, and fitting that around lectures and assignments takes planning. Some weeks it’s tight, and you learn to manage your time properly. I should say that I live with my parents, so I can’t tell you much about student accommodation or what it costs to live independently. If you’re coming from abroad, look into that before you commit, because fees change with the university, the course and your fee status, and living costs depend on the city. The university websites and UCAS are the best places to check. As for Birmingham, it’s a diverse city, transport is easy, and there’s no shortage of good Indian food. Joining university events and getting to know people from different backgrounds makes the whole experience better. Overall I’m happy I chose BCU. Do your research, plan your money carefully, use the support the university offers, and start building your skills early.
Likes (Indian Food): I gave Birmingham’s food scene 5/5, and the main reason is how easy it is to find food that tastes like home. There are Indian and South Asian restaurants, takeaway shops, and grocery stores all over the city, which makes a big difference when you’re an Indian student trying to settle into life in the UK. You can get North Indian dishes, South Indian food, vegetarian meals, biryani, curries, street food, and plenty of regional specialities. The city centre, Sparkbrook, and the Balti Triangle are good places to start. Prices are reasonable. A casual meal or takeaway usually runs about £7 to £12, while a sit-down restaurant is more like £15 to £25 or more per person, depending on where you go and what you order. I live with my parents, so most of my meals are home-cooked, which keeps my food costs down. I still eat out now and then, usually with friends or around university events, and it’s easy to find somewhere good. If you want familiar food and a city that makes it simple, whether you cook at home or eat out, Birmingham is an excellent pick for Indian students.
Dislikes (Permanent Immigration): Internships 3/5 - There are internships that can be available for students; however, finding a proper internship in Cyber Security is quite difficult. At Birmingham City University there are career and employability services which assist students, but the students should do research and send their CVs themselves. In the case of cyber security students, possible internships may include SOC analysis, IT security, networking, digital forensics, and other types of internships. Not all advertised internships are connected with Cyber Security, and some internships may require particular technical skills and even some previous experience in this field.

Birmingham City University is not really considered a top university, but rather a solid and mid-tier institution of higher learning. It is because BCU is not a part of the Russell Group.

As per the QS Rankings 2027, Birmingham City University is ranked #1001 which is constant from last 3 years.

Birmingham City University is a good university but it does not rank well by major ranking bodies like QS World, Times Higher Education, because these prioritize heavy research output and academic citations.

BCU mainly focuses on practical, vocational teaching and employability rather than big scale
