Durham University offers the 1-year MSc in Finance course that has an application deadline in September. This course includes the following:

  • The students will be taught on how to use the analytical and technical skills as well as the cutting-edge research techniques so that they receive equal access to the financial services. 
  • This is a 12-month full time course that comprises of a combination of core and optional modules.
  • Some of the topics included in the course are Advanced Financial Theory, Corporate Finance, Econometric Methods, Financial Modelling, and Business Forecasting. 
  • Some of the optional modules that have been included in the Finance course are Bank Management, Banking and Financial Intermediation, Climate Finance and Fintech Regulations.

Durham shaped me what I’m today!
Tips: Just choose your subject carefully! Studying a whole new subject in a year can be very overwhelming! Be prepared for a lot of self-study! Don't miss a single seminar! That's where you will learn things not in the lectures! But that doesn't mean you can miss lectures! Both are interconnected! Spend your time in the library! And remember one thing learning is more self-research-oriented here, which is not familiar to most Indian students!
Likes (Student Life): To imagine what Durham is, you can think of the whole city as the University. Few departments are at riverside few are at Bailey and few are at hill side. And when you're practically living in your University (city), your student life will be great no matter what you do. Even if you just go outside of your building, you will SEE students partying somewhere or a few students just roaming around! There are three libraries, and one of them, namely Palace Green Library, is a heritage site because of its historical value! Imagine spending your day or night in a 1000-year-old library! How would you feel? There were plenty of grounds! As a sportsman by myself, I enjoyed playing there! Durham's cricket academy is one of the country's greatest! Even Ben Stock did his practice there after coming out from injury! So you can imagine what kind of facilities you can get there.
Dislikes (Indian Food): Durham is a small town! It's not a city so ofcourse there is not so many options available! But Newcastle is just 15 minutes away by train! If you can go there you'll find plenty of good Indian restaurants. Most restaurants are British! There are plenty of pubs! My favourite was two one is Kokoro which is a Japanese Restaurant and another is Fat Hippo! You can find several outlets of Fat Hippo in entire UK. Their burger and tots are one of the best. I always prefer to cook myself to save money but I was eating outside as well!

You'll Grow exceptionally
Tips: There are no work placements, Durham is very isolated city peaceful and quite. There will be cultural differences like accents, behaviour. A bit hard to find Part-time Jobs. Scholarships depend on Course. Overall, very satisfied with course & Place.
Likes (Quality of faculty): The coursework is very rigorous, faculty approach is very easy with proper appointments. There are practical workshops apart from classroom teaching. The faculty is widely diverse with my professors were from, UK, Greece, China, Slavic for 4 modules.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): From Finance careers, there is alumni networks in almost every Financial services firm. Although the maximum opportunities are for undergrad programs. Investment Banking roles can attract a minimum pay of at least £80K, Mid & Back office £38K-£45K!!!

A rewarding academic journey with real life skills.
Tips: I just grew into myself. I learned life skills like cooking, laundry and learned to handle my expenses better. I didn't avail any scholarships. Very satisfied, good course, learned 2-3 new modules which are actually good for practical uses in my business. The country is very amazing, be it culture, people are very hospitable, peaceful and beautiful. Durham, especially, I found to be one of the safest cities in the UK.
Likes (Value for money): We had top tier faculty and a wide range of facilities at the business school. Business school itself was a state of the art facility where we had meeting rooms, presentation rooms, faculty meetings, bloomberg terminals and lecture halls. Communication with the university and faculty was really feasible and they helped with the queries with best of their ability.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): I didn't apply for the job so I am unaware of the post study sponsored jobs. But from what I have heard from my fellow mates, the UK's job market is very bad at the moment so even getting a job is difficult and sponsored is difficult.

This University is a good choice.
Tips: The university is well recognised amongst the recruiters in the UK. The programs are very well structured and the professors are very helpful. However, the Durham as a city is very dull. There is not much to do around. There are very less opportunities for part-time jobs because the city is so small. The 1st month in Durham is very difficult as the city is very cold, windy and hilly. You will have to walk a lot on inclined paths. So it is better to be mentally and physically prepared for that.
Likes (Safety): People around the city are very helpful. There are porters in every college to help students whenever needed. I have hardly faced any kind of racism from the people around me. The university has a night line for the female students to drop them to their destination late at night at a very low price of 2 pounds.
Dislikes (Indian Food): There are hardly 2-3 Indian restaurants in Durham and the food is not that great. The taste doesn’t justify the high prices. Cooking on my own is so much more affordable and satisfying. The ingredients are easily available around the city. There is only one Indian grocery store though.

Overwhelming, challenging and beautiful
Tips: Students should know the essence of Durham is concerned with staying in college accommodation which offers a sense of community and belonging. Secondly, Durham is a very close-knit and quiet city and the weather is mostly rainy and cold. Thirdly, the course a student selects will get challenging eventually.

Postgraduate student life at Ustinov College, Durham University
Tips: At Durham University, it was very much a big learning process for me since I had to learn how to budget my spending on everything. The major transition that I went through was communicating with individuals from different walks of life. I got a Commonwealth scholarship from the university worth £5000, which was deducted automatically from the total tuition fee of the university. I am quite satisfied with the whole experience I gained at Durham University with the course in Data Science.
Likes (Student Life): As a student at the University of Durham, especially in Ustinov College, which was my college, it was a very interesting experience due to the unique postgraduate society in the college. This comprised going to class during the day and engaging in personal studies either in my room or the Bill Bryson Library. It could have included preparing meals and socializing with other students in the common room. Some of the events that would be organized in the college were those arranged by the college committee, such as the formal dinners and some festivals including Lunar New Year and Diwali.
Dislikes (Permanent Immigration): Although there are simple ways of obtaining work visas after completing one’s education, it is extremely difficult to get an opportunity to obtain permanent residency because of constant changes in policies. Obtaining permanent residency becomes extremely difficult because highly educated people who graduated from universities cannot get employed owing to a lack of sponsorship. A lot of effort and luck are required for such a process. However, if such an opportunity is given to me, I would be willing to move to that country permanently.
