History
Solent University has its roots dating back to 1855, when its School of Art came into being. After 1855, in 1932 a School of Navigation was established, followed by Southampton School of Technology in 1951. It was in 1989 that the Southampton Institute became an independent higher education institute in 1989. In 2004-2005, the institute was tagged as a 'University' and granted powers to give degrees to graduates.
