Frequently Asked Questions

Q:   What scholarships are available for international students at the University of Cambridge?
A:

International students can avail of many University of Cambridge scholarships including Gates Cambridge, Cambridge Trust, and many country-based scholarships. The total number of the scholarships available is over 500 which support 1.100 to 1,400 students annually.

A:

As per the candidate's nationality, Cambridge University admission requirements differ and so do the qualifications for Cambridge courses. As an overview, students who are applying for undergraduate courses, need to apply through the UCAS portal. However, besides excellent scores in Class XII, students will need other additional qualifications such as College Board Advanced Placement Tests/ IIT JEE/ STEP/ Others. Students applying for postgraduate courses at University of Cambridge can apply via University of Cambridge Applicant Portal. University of Cambridge admission requirements for postgraduate courses are:

  • Minimum of a good upper second class (good 2:1) honours degree from a UK university or an equivalent standard from an overseas university; and
  • Completion of, or intermission from any current training or education course.

Cambridge University English Language Requirements:

  • IELTS Academic – Usually a minimum overall grade of 7.5, usually with 7.0 or above in each element
  • TOEFL (IBT) – Usually a minimum overall score of 110, with 25 or above in each element
Q:   Can I study at Cambridge directly after 12th?
A:

As an Indian student, you would have to provide additional qualifications over your Class 12th scores. This can be good scores in SAT, AP, or 1 year of the UG studies at a recognised Indian college or university. Application based on Class 12th scores alone, is unlikely to be accepted.

Academic, immersive and nerve wrecking experience.
Tips: Cambridge is a world-class university that is very rigorous academically. If you think getting in is tough, wait until you start studying your course. The professors are genuinely helping and profound in their scholarship. The support provided by the university is also immense but even after all of this, you should be the one who needs to do hard work.
Likes (Value for money): I went to Cambridge on a full scholarship which funded my stay, tuition and airfare fees and therefore, I actually saved some money instead of spending on it. Other than that, I would say that apart from technical and professional courses at any UK university, courses in humanities are always less preferable to spend your money on.
Dislikes (Permanent Immigration): Although I would like to settle in the UK permanently, it is becoming increasingly hard to settle there with tightening immigration rules and the local population's outlook towards immigrants in general. The economy is also weakening in the UK and with the slowdown the chances of getting good jobs are diminishing.

Great learning environment.
Tips: Students should be prepared to adapt to the environment. The biggest adjustment was the difference in culture, food and people. These are some of the differences you'll need to navigate. I didn't apply for any scholarships so I'm not familiar with that process. I am satisfied with the university, my course and the country.

Highlights

  • The course will first cover much of the "classical" computational group theory, including the various algorithms for working with permutations, rewriting (which will also include Groebner Bases) and working with matrices over finite elds. This part will encompass about the first twelve lectures
  • The second half of the course will cover the more recent work, including working with matrices of integers (to represent the group, or otherwise), the (very) current Matrix recognition project and Small Cancellation methods.
