History
Oakland Uni was established in 1957 when Matilda Dodge Wilson donated her estate to Michigan State University. It was originally known as Michigan State University-Oakland. In 1959, the university enrolled its first students. In 1960, the first UG research program was initiated.
Then, in 1963, the university was renamed to Oakland University. Since 1970, this university has been independent of Michigan State University. The university opened its first new medical school in 2011. Then, in 2013, the university’s athletic teams made the move to the Horizon League.
