History
The University of Houston was founded by trustees of the Board of Education of the Houston Independent School District (HISD. It started as Houston Junior College, primarily focusing on training future teachers. Initially, Houston Junior College offered only night courses to train future teachers from the San Jacinto High School campus. In 1927, Houston Junior College commenced its first classes with 232 students and 12 faculty recruited from Rice University, the University of Texas and Sam Houston State Teacher's College.In 1933, Houston's Board of Education adopted a resolution to make Houston Junior College a four-year institution of higher education and renamed it the University of Houston. In 1963, the University of Houston became a state institution and in 1977 joined the newly created University of Houston system
