Ideal preparation includes coursework in calculus through multivariable and vector calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, classical mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics and statistical physics, quantum mechanics, computer programming, an introductory survey of all of astronomy, and some coursework in stellar astronomy, galactic astronomy, and extragalactic astronomy & cosmology Students with degrees other than physics, astronomy/astrophysics, or closely related fields are welcome to apply. Before applying, such students should still have completed calculus I, II, III, a course in linear algebra and differential equations (two separate courses or a combined course), a complete calculus-based survey of introductory physics (often called University Physics I, II, III or Physics for Scientists & Engineers I, II, III), and a course in computer programming (preferably Python). If admitted, students will still need to complete the core upper-division (junior/senior) classes in the undergraduate curriculum before starting graduate coursework. The overall GPA or the GPA in the last 60 units of study should be at least 3.0. The GPA in mathematics and physics courses should also be at least 3.0 Indian Students: A GPA of B or higher is required for graduate study Grade B equivalency: 50-54%
