Founded in 1851, Santa Clara University is a private Jesuit university in Santa Clara, California. History
Santa Clara University was established in 1851 and is one of the oldest universities in the USA. Father Junipero Serra founded the eighth of the original 21 California missions, Mission Santa Clara de Asis, in 1777. Santa Clara College was started as a preparatory school for only boys. John Nobili and S.J. are the founders and first presidents of Santa Clara College from 1851 to 1856. In 1853, Santa Clara began to offer college programs. At the preparatory and undergraduate levels, Santa Clara College had over 275 students enrolled in 1875. In 1912, the college decided to add the Engineering and Law schools and became the University of Santa Clara. Furthermore, the University acquired Santa Clara University as its official name.
