The creation of the University of Maryland Baltimore County goes back to the year 1963. Finally, in 1966, the university welcomed its first class. The main UMBC campus is right outside of Baltimore City, near Washington D.C., and a three-hour drive from NYC. The UMBC main campus size is around 500 acres and is located in suburban Baltimore County.

Though there is just one main campus of UMBC, the Shady Grove campus is a branch campus operating at The Universities at Shady Grove, a USM regional center located in Rockville, MD. UMBC Athletics
Some of the facilities at the UMBC campus include RAC (Retriever Activities Center) Gymnasium, Arena, Outdoor Pool, Natatorium, Ten Tennis Courts, UMBC Stadium complex, Alumni Field, Softball Field, 2 Practice Fields, etc. The UMBC boasts 17 intercollegiate varsity sports teams, also referred to as the UMBC Retrievers/Retrievers Dawgs, who compete in NCAA Division I. UMBC Campus Safety
The University of Maryland, Baltimore County offers a safe environment for students at the university to flourish; however, it is impossible to guarantee complete prevention of crime or accidents at any location. Therefore, UMBC works closely with the UMBC Police and some other campus offices that work towards the reduction of risks at the university and ensure safety and security at the university. The UMBC Police Department works towards spreading awareness about general crime, sexual assault, rape awareness, and other important issues by publishing films, conducting lectures, bulletins, sharing posters, brochures, etc. to spread awareness amongst the students at the university.
