- Those applicants who have earned or will earn a bachelor's degree at a regionally accredited college or university in the United States (or the equivalent of a baccalaureate degree from a nationally recognized institution in another country) are eligible to be considered for admission to the Graduate School at the University of Maryland.
- The Graduate School requires as a minimum standard an average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in all undergraduate courses taken at a regionally accredited college or university. Adequate performance in prerequisite courses is required.
- A bachelor's degree, GPA of 3.0 or better, in engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, or another technical field from an accredited institution
- Successful completion of the following courses (or their equivalent):
- Math: Calculus I, II, and Differential Equations
- Biology: Either Biology for Engineers, Molecular and Cellular Biology, or Physiology
- Chemistry: General Chemistry I with Lab
- Physics: Physics I or Physics II
- Engineering: Thermodynamics or a chemistry class with substantial content devoted to energetics/thermodynamics
- For those with non-engineering undergraduate degrees, the department also looks for coursework indicating an aptitude for bioengineering. In addition to the above requirements, non-engineering applicants also must have at least one of the following:
- Preferred: Fluid mechanics or biofluidics course
- Applied math course (300-level or above)
- Quantitative engineering course
- Computer programming course
- Linear algebra
