Generally referred to as the UT Tyler, the University of Texas at Tyler is a non-profit institution of research and higher education in Tyler County of the state of Texas, United States. It was originally set up as Tyler State College in the year 1971. In 1975, it transformed into a university under the name Texas Eastern University. In 1979, it joined the University of Texas System. It has accreditation from the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
UT Tyler has a beautiful 259-acre main campus in a picturesque location with a lake and thick forest of pine and oak trees. The main campus consists of excellent academic, administrative, recreational and support facilities for the students. The 88-foot Riter Tower with 57 bells is the most striking feature of the university. Herrington Patriot Centre is the most important facility on the campus. It houses a gymnasium, convocation area, pool and spa, fitness center, indoor jogging track, weight area, volleyball and basketball courts, faculty offices, classrooms, and laboratories. The Meadows Student Lounge is a scenic space for studying or relaxing after a workout.
UT Tyler provides on-campus accommodation to the students in its five housing facilities that are just a few minutes' walks from all the academic and recreational spaces. These residences accommodate over 1,700 students, which include both boys and girls. Other on-campus facilities include a counseling center, bookstore, health clinic, and wellness center. Apart from this, UT Tyler operates campuses in Palestine and Longview.
UT Tyler has seven colleges that offer over 80 undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral degrees programs in arts, basic sciences, engineering, business, education, nursing, health sciences, psychology and pharmacy. It also has several centers and institutes to carry out research and practice. The university also extends a range of certificate courses and online degrees. At present, the university is home to about 10,000 students from 167 Texas Counties and 45 states of the U.S. The student population includes international students from over 58 countries of the world. The academic staff of the university comprises highly-learned and experienced affiliates. The student-to-faculty ratio at the university is 19:1.
The university has more than 80 active student organizations that work towards building relationships between communities as well as promoting various academic, personal and social interests. With the sports affiliation from National Collegiate Athletic Association, the university has 15 varsity teams for sports like basketball, golf, soccer, tennis, track and field, cross country and volleyball. Both men's and women's teams participate in the Lone Star Conference as the Patriots.
UT Tyler maintains a comprehensive list of alumni living across the globe, especially of those who are highly-successful and recognized for their contribution in their respective professional fields. Some notable names in the list are Bryan Hughes (American Politician and Attorney), Craig Tiley (South African Tennis Executive), Brandon Rhyder (Country Singer), Glenn Canfield Jr. (American Businessman and Metallurgist) and Matt Riccardi (Director of Scouting).
