The University of Virginia or commonly known as UVA, was founded in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson who was the third President of the United States. UVA is a public university, whose main campus is located in Charlottesville which is in Central Virginia. The University of Virginia campus is spread across 1,682 acres of land. The University of Virginia houses its Medical Center which has 671 beds and has been ranked #1 Hospital in Virginia by Newsweek in the year 2022.
University of Virginia rankings as per US News & World Report – Best Colleges 2023 stands at #3 among other public universities in the USA. In terms of national level rankings, UVA ranks at #25 for the year 2023 as per US News & World Report - National University Ranking. While UVA ranks at #156 as per THE (Times Higher Education) - University Ranking for 2023. The University of Virginia QS ranking for World Universities was recorded at #260 for the year 2024.
In terms of academics, Virgnia University vary in number based on levels. At the undergraduate level, there are around 76 courses with four minors, at the graduate level UVA offers 69 Master’s and 55 doctoral courses are offered along with eight certificate courses. UVA courses are offered in 11 schools and one college of – Arts & Sciences, Data Science, Business, Education & Human Development, Business, Leadership & Public Policy, Engineering & Applied Science, Commerce, Law, Medicine, Architecture and Nursing.
For the class of 2026, University of Virginia acceptance rate was reported at 19%. Hence, University of Virginia admissions were moderately selective for the year 2021. Around 12% of the admitted students at UVA were first generation students and 9% of the students were international.
The University of Virginia offers on-campus housing for its enrolled students. First year students can choose from designated traditional residential halls like - Alderman Road and McCormick Road are hall-style housing and, Alderman Road is a suite-style housing option. There are also three residential colleges which can also be opted by students of all years at UVA. Though students can submit their preferences, but they will be allotted only those options which are deemed suitable by the UVA housing committee.
At the University of Virginia students are offered on-campus placements. In 2021, the University of Virginia placement rate was reported at 76.2% and the average annual salary was reported at USD 70,604. UVA has been recognized by PayScale for offering a good return on investment, since students don’t bag an employment offer below USD 62,000 on an average.
UVA has a total of 230,000 alumni who are alive and reside in various parts of the world. Some of notable alumni of University of Virginia are – Edgar Allan Poe an American Romantic writer, Robert F. Kennedy who was a US Senator, Sarah Drew a notable American actress, Francis Sellers Collins who was a physician-geneticist and led the project on Human Genome Project, and many others.
