What is Webometrics Ranking?

Webometrics is a web-based ranking with the highest number of HEIs (higher education institutions) in its database. Webometrics ranking is published twice a year, while the ranking data is collected in January for the first half of the year. Whereas, Webometrics begins collecting data from July onwards for the second half of the year's rankings. Thus, every six months, Webometrics rankings are published based on independent, objective and scientific (a-priori) methods of ranking.

Webometrics University ranking has entered its 20th year since the rankings were published. With a pool of over 30,000+ global universities from more than 20 countries, Webometrics has ranked universities for their openness, research and citations.

Objectives of Webometrics Ranking

Certain objectives are followed by Webometrics ranking to publish web-based university-specific rankings globally. These objectives, followed by Webometrics, are as follows:

  • Promote publications on the web and make them accessible to everyone with the help of universities.
  • Not just assess the university based on their research or global presence, but go beyond these parameters.
  • Encourage communication between scholars through e-journals or blog discussions.
  • Support and encourage universities to use the web more actively to publish their works.
  • Help students find a data point to consider universities abroad for admission. But do not take it as the final word for forming decisions about universities.

Thus, these are some of the main objectives of the Webometrics ranking system for a better understanding among students, scholars and professors.

Can Students Use Webometrics Ranking for University Admissions?

Webometrics Ranking of World Universities functions as a digital assessment tool for university research, which establishes their academic status. The Cybermetrics Lab in Spain published a ranking system that evaluates more than 31,000 academic institutions which provides better insights into smaller regional universities than traditional rankings do. Students can consider it for shortlisting universities abroad because:

  • The digital impact assessment establishes the university's knowledge-sharing capacity through its assessment of research output and online presence.
  • Webometrics university rankings assessment framework evaluates academic institutions through its assessment of "Global South" universities and smaller college institutions which do not exist in research-focused rankings.
  • Their ranking system evaluates institutional visibility through its assessment of institutional impact and it assesses institutional research through its evaluation of research output and citation activities.
  • The system uses web-based methods for assessment, which create advantages for institutions that have extensive IT staff while it fails to identify academic excellence which exists in research.
  • Aslo, Webometrics university ranking system functions as an additional resource which should be used together with traditional rankings from QS and Times Higher Education.

Webometrics world ranking is equally important in assessing world university rankings like others like QS and THE. Webometrics rankings are released twice a year within six months, unlike others, which publish it at the end of the previous year. Thus, those looking for admission abroad can also consider the Webometrics ranking of World University to decide on studying abroad.
