Students must have heard the term Tertiary Education when researching study abroad education opportunities. What is it?

Tertiary education means any type of education pursued after finishing school. This includes diplomas, undergraduate (UG) and graduate certificates, associate's, bachelor's, masters and doctoral degrees.

Tertiary education is more commonly referred to as postsecondary education. It refers to education after high school. Undergraduate programs include postsecondary education that takes up three to four years to complete. It can include certificates, diplomas, associate's and bachelor's degrees. Postgraduate programs require prior completion of an undergraduate degree. The postgraduate education includes a diploma, certificate, masters and doctoral degrees. Tertiary education programs are carried out at vocational schools, community colleges, professional schools, technical schools, colleges, and universities.

Certificate Programs

These programs are designed for students who require career training that allows them to start with their career within a short period of time. Most certificate programs are to be completed in six months to a year of full-time study. You can find certificate programs that will give you training for an entry-level job in most skill-based professions.

Undergraduate Degrees

Most undergraduate degree programs are completed in two to four years, and these programs consist of an organized curriculum/syllabus that includes general education along with core and elective courses. General education course typically covers general topics in subjects like English, Math, Natural Sciences, Humanities etc. Core courses will focus on a major area of studies like management, nursing or engineering, while elective subjects complement the major that you choose.

Graduate Degrees

Master's degree programs are supposed to build upon your undergraduate academic knowledge through advanced curriculum and independent research. Master's programs in some fields will also require you to obtain professional experience like an internship.

Doctoral Degrees

Doctoral degree programs let you continue research or coursework from your master's- level work. After a few years of coursework and research, students are required to produce a dissertation or doctoral thesis. This is the way to obtain your degree.

Graduate Certificate Programs

Graduate certificate programs are meant for students who have an undergraduate degree as well as work experience and are trying to expand their knowledge as well as skills in that field. You can also use a graduate certificate program to prepare for a graduate degree program since many schools abroad accept graduate certificate credits toward master's degrees.
