History
The University of Zurich was founded in 1833. It was the first university to be established by a democratic political system. From 1847, the university allowed women to attend Philosophy lectures. Then in 1883, this university celebrated its 50th anniversary. In 1901, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine was added. In 1914, there was the official opening of the university premises. In 1998, this university gained political autonomy and attained the status of an autonomous legal entity. In 2006, Zurich University became one of the Europe’s leading research universities and became a member of the League of European Research Universities (LERU).
