Rooting back to 1828, the Uni Central Lancashire started its journey as the Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge. In honor of Edmund Robert Harris, who donated a substantial amount, the university was renamed the Harris Institute in 1882. Later in 1956, it became the Harris College, following a government re-organisation of technical education. When the university was designated by the Central Government as a polytechnic, it became the Preston Polytechnic in 1973, and in 1984, it was renamed the Lancashire Polytechnic.
In 1992, when the Government bestowed degree-awarding powers to polytechnics, the university acquired its current name - the University of Lancashire. In 2007, the university released its logo to draw focus on the short name University of Lancashire.
