Established in 1836, the University of London is an open-research university, associated with the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the European University Association, and Universities UK. Also, it was the first university in the United Kingdom to conduct examinations for women. It is among the oldest universities in England. In 1837, the university began offering degrees in the area of medicine, law, and arts.

The campus of the university is spread over 12 hectares of land. It comprises eight residence halls and a senate house, which features a central library with thousands of book, journals, and magazines. The campus is well maintained and provides a calm learning environment. It is in proximity to many cafes and restaurants. Also, the stationary shops, departmental stores, ATMs, and most importantly, chemist shops are all located nearby the campus. The students are provided with all the required facilities at the residence halls. The campus aims to offer the best services and facilities to the students. It is surrounded by greenery. Students spend a good time at the campus. All the events, fests, quizzes, and competitions conducted by the university are organized within the premises. There are eighteen institutions, which are located within the campus. Some of the main institutes are the Courtauld Institute of Art, Goldsmiths, City, King's College, London School of Economics & Political Science, Queen Mary Institute, St. George's, and the Royal Holloway.

The university offers an undergraduate degree program and postgraduate degree program. The total strength of the university is about 2,13,270 students. The undergraduate program includes 92,760 students, and 68,500 students are under the postgraduate program. The university comprises some major institutes, including Institute of Commonwealth Studies, Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, Institute of English Studies, and Institute of Historical Research. This provides the students with a great opportunity to explore the fieldwork under the well-experienced faculty members. Also, the students are taken for industrial visits along with the faculty members. They are guided under professionals. A broad range of subjects gives students the scope to choose a course according to their area of interest.

The university has many remarkable alumni, including Fred Mulley (former British Secretary of State Defence), Mahatma Gandhi (Father of the Nation - India), Florence Nightingale (modern nursing), Nelson Mandela (Father of the Nation - South Africa), Alexander Bell (inventor of telephone), Elton John (renowned singer), Jeremy Heywood (11th cabinet secretary), Albert Einstein (world-famous scientist, won Nobel Prize in Physics), John F.
