Saint Peter’s University History
In 1872, Saint Peter’s College, the Jesuit College of New Jersey was founded as a Liberal Arts College for men. Its first class started in September of 1878, and 71 students originally enrolled in the Preparatory Department. As more students arrived, work began on a new school building on Grand Street in the year 1899.
- By 1900, the college had granted more than 60 bachelor’s degrees and around 25 master’s degrees. Five years later, the College and Saint Peter’s High School, though situated in the same buildings, were separate academic institutes
- In 1930, St. Peter’s reopened after getting closed due to World War I and women were admitted to evening session for the first time
- With the re-birth, Peacock was named as the official mascot of the college. In 1966, St. Peter’s became fully co-educational
