History
The institute first opened in 1855, under the name the Paterson City Normal School. The university introduced a one-year teaching training curriculum for graduate students aiming to become a teacher in 1875 and later increased the curriculum to two years. In 1910, the university went through multiple changes in its location over time. From 1936 onwards William Paterson University started offering general college courses to students for students who wanted to pursue other careers than teaching. In April 1937, the Paterson City Normal School name was changed to New Jersey State Teacher’s College.
In 1938, William Paterson University introduced an adult school, and in the following year, the university also introduced a Nursing program. A Business Education curriculum and a Kindergarten curriculum were launched in 1943.
