History
The institute first opened in 1855, under the name the Paterson City Normal School. From 1936 onwards William Paterson University started offering general college courses to students for students who wanted to pursue other careers than teaching. In April 1937, the Paterson City Normal School name was changed to New Jersey State Teacher’s College. In 1997, the institution became the William Paterson University of New Jersey.
