History
The university began in 1870 as the School of Mines. In general, Fed Uni is the culmination of the former University of Ballarat and the Gippsland Campus of Monash University. In 1926, the Ballarat Teachers' College began at Dana Street State School. By 1967, the Ballarat School of Mines had divided into 3 divisions. Then, in 1970, the tertiary division moved to a new campus at Mt. Helen. TAFE studies were offered on the SMB campus, and the secondary division moved to a new site. In 2013, the Victorian Parliament passed the legislation to set up Federation University Australia.
