Eligibility for Australian University Admissions 2025

While the requirements for international students at Australian universities can be extensive and overwhelming, we have simplified them for easier understanding. Australian university requirements for admission for international students are given below:

  • Admission to diploma-level courses requires applicants to have a minimum percentage of 60% or higher in Australia after completing the 12th grade.
  • For admission to a bachelor's degree program in Australia after completing 12th grade, the minimum percentage required is at least 65% or above.
  • Whereas students applying for master's admission in Australian Universities must have:
    • Almost all Australian Universities accept the 3-year graduation system for entry into most postgraduate courses. For instance, an Indian bachelor's degree like B.A., or B.Com. Or B.Sc. (ordinary) is equivalent to an Australian Bachelor (Ordinary) Degree with a total education of 12 years.
    • However, some courses and universities may require a qualification equivalent to an Australian Bachelor (Honours) Degree, which requires either an honours graduation degree like a B.A. (H), B. Com (H), etc or 16 years of formal education, meaning another year after graduation or a four-year degree course like B.E., B. Tech and other such courses.
    • The minimum percentage required for Australia after a Bachelor's is at least 65%, but may vary per graduate program and the university the applicant is applying to.
    • Applicants must apply to a CRICOS-registered institution to go on a Subclass (500) for UG or PF courses when applying for a student visa in Australia
    • A good first degree from a leading university in India or its equivalent is essential for most universities.

Australian University Admission Requirements for International Students

To apply to Australian universities, international students must provide details of their education, including course subjects and grades, in their application as part of the academic check for admission requirements. Students applying for admission must submit an official transcript from each college or university they have attended after secondary school, including complete details of the subjects, credits involved, and any other relevant information, such as correspondence courses and diplomas. You should provide the attested copy of the following:

  • Standard X Mark sheet
  • Standard XII Mark sheet
  • Bachelor's Degree / Provisional Certificate with mark sheet
  • There are various exams needed to study in Australia.
  • Plus ELP exam scores are also a must.

Note: If the transcripts and other relevant documents are not in English, they must be translated into English and bundled with certified copies of the originals (certified by a person or agency recognised by the law or government of that country).

Admission Intakes in Australia for Admission

Ideally, there are two major intakes in Australia followed by one more intake which is slightly less popular.

  • Australia's February Intake: Also known as the primary intake of Australia, the February intake is one of the most popular intakes. Here, all universities of Australia, including the Level 1 universities in Australia, or the Go8 universities of Australia, offer admissions for all major courses.
  • Australia's July Intake: The secondary intake, also known as the July intake in Australia, is another popular intake. Here, also, the majority of the universities offer admissions. Admissions begin as early as October or November of the previous year.
  • November Intake in Australia: To bridge admission gap for those who missed admission for the major intakes, a very few universities open admission and enrol smaller number of students.

Based on the intakes mentioned above, applicants can plan their admissions to universities in Australia. Once this is sorted, check out and understand the admission requirements in the next section.

Australian University's Application Requirements

International students have certain requirements for studying in Australia. Applications to Australian universities require the following details of entrance, English language proficiency, previous academic performance and others given below for reference:

  • Secondary and higher secondary reports, certificates, and final exams' transcripts (mark sheets or report cards). It is ideal to convert the marks obtained by Australia's grading system.
IELTS and GMAT exam scorecards (in case the student is applying for an MBA course) must be provided. The minimum scores in IELTS and GMAT exams may vary from education provider to provider. Please refer to the university's website for the specific course eligibility requirements. Check out about IELTS Score for Australia
  • Suppose you are applying for an MBA or a higher education degree, such as a doctoral program. In that case, you may be required to provide work experience certificates or letters that mention the complete work details, including key responsibilities and positions held. A detailed CV is also mandatory.
  • A statement of purpose or personal essay should include career goals, interests, extracurricular activities, reasons for choosing the particular stream, and how the student plans to manage financially during their stay in Australia.
  • Letter of recommendation (two recommended) from the person who has taught the student or knows him/her professionally, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of the student and why he/she would excel in the chosen field, also needs to be provided.

Admission Tests Accepted in Australia

As part of Australian university entry requirements, international students will have to provide the following admission or entrance test scores:

  • Applicants are advised to register for all required admission tests well beforehand for Australian universities.
  • Most importantly, you must possess good English language skills since Australia is an English-speaking country. Therefore, you must take an English language proficiency test. The most commonly accepted English proficiency exam is the IELTS, which is the only one accepted by the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship.
  • IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, and Duolingo are also accepted for admission to Australian universities.
  • To pursue post-graduation through an MBA program in Australian universities or B-schools, you must take the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). This is not mandatory; however, a few colleges require this to gain admission.

Follow-up after applying to Australian Universities

After applying to the shortlisted universities and submitting the relevant documents and other application requirements, you can now wait, as it usually takes a week to get a reply from the university. Once you get your CoE (confirmation of enrollment) you can begin your student visa application. Also during this time, you can work on your GS Requirements, that is required for a student visa application.

Meanwhile, you can review the visa requirements by visiting the local Australian Government office for details or by checking the Australian Government Department of Immigration and Citizenship's official website. During this time, you can also make the necessary arrangements to pay the course fee and support your living expenses during your stay in Australia. You can proceed to the visa application process as soon as you receive an Electronic Confirmation of Enrollment (eCoE) from a particular university/institution.
