History
University College Cork was established in 1845 and was earlier known as Queen’s College Cork. The university witnessed an enrollment of around 115 students in 1849 and appointed its very first female professor in Ireland in 1910. The university continued to witness an increase in the number of students over the years. In 1862 the West Wing of the University’s quadrangle was destroyed in a fire. In the years ahead, the University College Cork built observatories and buildings and continued to expand.
