Applying to study abroad? Need guidance in preparing your LORs? Here, we have provided Letter of recommendation guidelines that will help you with your application process. A LOR usually consists of 400-500 words and fits on one page. It is divided into 4-5 paragraphs: an introduction, 2-3 body paragraphs and a conclusion.

A Letter of Recommendation (LOR) is a helpful document for students applying to colleges or courses. A proper LOR format for students explains skills, behaviour, and academic work. A simple and honest student recommendation letter helps admission teams understand the student better.

Guidelines for a Letter of Recommendation (LOR)

A Letter of Recommendation (LOR) is an important document for students who are applying for college admission, higher studies, scholarships, or internships. A LOR for students is usually written by a teacher, professor, school principal, or mentor who knows the student well. This letter helps the admission team understand the student’s skills, behaviour, and learning attitude, not just exam marks.

Following the correct Letter of Recommendation format is very important. A proper LOR format for students makes the letter easy to read and understand. It usually starts with a short introduction of the recommender, then explains how they know the student. After that, the letter talks about the student’s academic performance, discipline, skills, and strengths with some real examples. At the end, the recommender gives a final opinion and support for the student.

A good student recommendation letter shows qualities like hard work, honesty, leadership, and interest in studies. For universities, a strong academic LOR helps them decide if the student is suitable for the course. Using the right recommendation letter format also shows seriousness and professionalism.

What is LOR Format for Students

An LOR usually consists of 400-500 words and fits on one page. The letter of recommendation format can be divided into 4-5 paragraphs: an introduction, 2-3 body paragraphs and a conclusion.

We have discussed the LOR format for students below.

  • Para 1: Introduction - This consists of a brief description of recommender’s credentials (title, college/company name, including his relationship with the client), how long and in what capacity he has known the client; to highlight the client’s stand, he can compare the client’s status, as against any other students whom he has supervised or taught. He/she has to identify responsibilities, including the number of people supervised. Close this paragraph with the client’s outstanding qualities that motivate the recommender to recommend him/her.
  • Para 2: Discuss one quality (for example, academic prowess, research aptitude, ability in thinking out of the box, leadership, organizational, teamwork skills, taking initiatives, work ethics, and/or maturity). Choose any one of these or any other that relates to the client, for each paragraph, and provide a substantial and impressive example or instance when the client displayed that quality. This is very important.
  • Para 3: Discuss any other quality, and provide an impressive example of when the client displayed that quality.
  • Para 4: Discuss yet another quality, and provide an impressive example of when the client displayed that quality.
  • Para 5: Conclusion - Summary of the client’s strengths and a ringing and enthusiastic endorsement of his/her candidacy.

Why is it important to follow the LOR format for Students?

As an LOR is a formal document, it is therefore important for students to format a recommendation letter in the right way. Please find below the advantages of using a format:

  • It provides formal structure to the document, leaving a good impression on admissions committee (Ad Com).
  • A format eases out the process of writing the LOR. It becomes easier for recommenders to follow the format and add details accordingly.
  • Having a reference letter format reduces the chances of missing out essential details. When someone writes in a flow, at times, crucial details might be left out and unimportant details can take up more space. Using a format for lor can help in giving equal space to all important aspects.
  • A letter needs proper closing details, which an LOR format for students can provide.
  • Using a format for LORs can even help in proofreading the document as you can check the areas which you have covered.

A letter of recommendation format is surely a good starting point to create an impression recommendation letter. However, you still have to know which traits, instances and accolades can be mentioned by each recommender. This will ensure the LOR sounds credible and factual, helping you create a favourable impression for yourself.

Important: Each LOR draft (considering there are 2-3 LORs for one applicant) should highlight different qualities so that they do not look written by one person. Also, the examples used in each letter of recommendation format sample should be specific to that recommender only.

Whom should you choose as your recommender for the best impression?

Your choice of recommender should depend upon your familiarity with the recommender and the recommender’s association with the field that you ate applying for. Therefore, it is prudent to choose recommender’s from fields related to the program that you are applying for. This ensures that someone who is well-versed in the field can vouch for your aptitude and ability to excel in it using suitable first-hand examples/instances that showcase your potential. Hence, choosing someone who knows you well and is from same domain that you are applying for is always a good idea.

What kind of qualities/traits/achievements should your recommender mention in an LOR?

You should always try to mention accolades, traits or instances in an LOR that make you appear like more eligible for a program. In addition, it is best to mention traits that you have examples for and ones that the recommender may have seen first-hand. For instance, in an LOR for MBA program, you could mention traits like leadership, problem-solving or communication with specific instances where the recommender may have seen it to create an impression that you already have some of the essential skills required to be a good management professional.

To conclude you letter of recommendation, summarize how the qualities and skills of the applicant makes them well-suited for the given program. Recommenders can also discuss what makes the applicant a good fit for the course. The LOR should also be concluded by the recommender by offering their endorsement officially to the applicant, along with a seal or stamp.

A:
