Faqir Chand Kohli was born in 1924 in Peshawar, into a middle-class Punjabi family. After Partition, like millions of others his family lost everything and started over.

In 1969, he joined a small, unknown division of Tata called TCS. At that time most Indians had never even seen a computer. "Software" wasn't a career it was hardly even a concept. But Kohli saw what others couldn't. He saw that India's greatest export was brainpower, not textiles.

He convinced J.R.D. Tata to bet on this strange new field. He sent young engineers to work with global clients, proving Indian talent could solve the world's hardest problems.

From there, he built:

• TCS into India's first software giant as a CEO
