While Commerce and related subjects in the FAME (Finance, Accounting, Management and Economics) Category gain strength in India, the percentage of students visiting countries abroad continues to be dominated by STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) category. Though Economics and Management are famous enough courses and call good strength of students, accounting remains at the back end. And perhaps rightly so. With the different accounting policies in all countries…taking up a course in accounting abroad could mean a waste of time and energy. But before you sign off Accounting from Abroad, wait and look at Australia.

Accounting from Australia

Accounting continues to be one of the top choices in courses in Australia. One of the reasons remain that Australia as a country is always looking out for Accountants. With high demand in the job scenario, the obvious need for accounting related courses makes it all the more well acknowledged. Adding to the popularity of the course, especially from Indian point of view, is the acceptance of the CPA qualification by ICAI and vice versa.

Simplifying the statement, it can be said that a Chartered Accountant from India is eligible to be qualified as a CPA in Australia and accordingly practice. Similarly, ICAI recognizes CPA from Australia and the person can practice in the country. This was brought into effect by a Mutual Recognition Agreement signed by Institute of Chartered Accountants India (ICAI) and CPA Australia in February 2009 which was re-signed in September 2014. Of course the student would have to write a few exams and there are some eligibility criterion, but the fact remains that your Accounting degree is good in Australia.

So, if you are a full Associate Member of ICAI, you can apply for membership to CPA. You can enrol directly, write a couple of required exams. Once qualified, you can get a membership of CPA Australia and are qualified to practice in the country. It is important to note that to be eligible, you ought to be a present member of ICAI and also have a recognized bachelor’s degree.

Types of Accounting Courses

Unlike in India, where there is no special course for accounting, Australia has special designated courses in Accounting. A student can opt for a bachelor of arts in Accounting or even a bachelor of business in Accounting. The same applies to master’s programmes as well. Also, on a professional level, there are a wide variety of certificate diplomas available from TAFE Institutes in Australia. A student can also go on to pursue a CPA after completing a bachelor level degree in accountancy.
