Studyabroad.shiksha.com got in touch with Ann Issac and learned about her first-hand experience in pursuing MSc in Investment and Finance from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, UK.

Q. Tell us about the course you are pursuing at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, UK?

Ann Issac: I am pursuing MSc in Investment and Finance at University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. It is a one-year post-graduate programme with topics in investment and finance combined.

Q. Kindly tell us about your academic and professional profile?

Ann: I completed B. Com (Honours) from Christ University, Bangalore with a first-class degree and went on to work in the banking industry. I worked with HSBC in the Commercial Banking and Market Regulatory Compliance divisions for three years.

Q. How tough would you say it is to get into the University of Strathclyde? What does the university expect in a prospective student profile?

Ann: The acceptance rate of the University of Strathclyde is relatively low, which makes it quite difficult to receive an offer from Strathclyde. While a good academic record combined with practical experience gives an edge, I believe being able to demonstrate how passionate one is on pursuing a degree in their area of interest would be a strong component the University looks out for in the prospective student profiles.

Q. Why did you shortlist this college? What parameters did you take into account when making the final decision? What other school admits did you have?

Ann: Strathclyde has an impressive record of student satisfaction, research quality, and career prospects. The course structure and content of the MSc programme suited my preferences. Also, the university is located in Glasgow, which is a very vibrant and student-friendly city.

I received an offer from Durham University besides the offer from Strathclyde.

Q. What all exams did you appear to get into the University? How did you prepare for these exams?

Ann: I underwent IELTS coaching for a month and cleared the test with a score of 7.5. No entrance/aptitude test score, such as a GMAT/GRE was a requirement for the programme.

Q. When and how did you apply to this college/university? How long did it take from application to admission?

Ann: I made an online application six months prior to the start of the course and within two days of application submission I received a conditional offer. The prompt response from the University gave me sufficient time to fulfill the pending conditions and have the visa processing completed right on time. My course started in September 2019.

Q. Could you give prospective students an idea about the cost of studying at the university?

Ann: My tuition and living expenses are funded through a student loan from a bank. Additionally, Strathclyde Business School offered me a partially funded postgraduate scholarship. Strathclyde offers plenty of funding opportunities to international students on a competitive basis.

Q. Did you avail of any study abroad agent services for admission related help?

Ann: I did take guidance from a career advisor on application and visa processing.

Q. How has your study abroad experience been so far in your chosen college? What are the top 3 things you like about your college and 3 things you wish were better?

Ann: The university is located in the centre of Glasgow, a very beautiful and welcoming city. It is also a multi-cultural city giving an opportunity to interact with people from different countries and cultures. Besides exploring Glasgow, I have also had the opportunity to visit other exciting tourist destinations around Scotland. Top three things I like about the University are

  1. The course is delivered through a combination of lectures and workshops and the lecturers and tutors are very approachable and supportive at all times. The university has a strong student support system in place and is very responsive to student feedback.
  2. The campus offers a number of facilities including a very vibrant Student Union, well-maintained on-campus student accommodation, state-of-the-art fitness centre, and remarkable library services. There are many clubs and societies accommodating the likes and interests of all students.
  3. Although the current COVID-19 crisis has been a setback for all students, Strathclyde has been supporting students in an impressive manner. Face to face classes was suspended but the university has managed to make the best possible alternatives for students in a timely manner.

My overall experience at Strathclyde has been wonderful. No comments on things I wish were better.

Q. Your advice to study abroad aspirants wanting to get into your course/university? What worked for you?

Ann: It is important to identify your key area of interest and the prospects to build a career in it. Spend some quality time researching to find out the programme and the university that best fits your career aspirations.

I was really passionate about the reason why I wanted to pursue a Master's degree in my field of interest. I realised that pursuing a Masters degree abroad was going to be a huge investment for me in terms of money and effort. I spent close to a year to study the different options available in courses, universities, and career opportunities.

studyabroad.shiksha.com wishes Ann Issac a prosperous future ahead.
