Monash University Faculty of Law History
Initially known as “The Monash Legal Service”, the institute began offering legal advice to its students in a room as part of the Law School Building during the 1970s.
The institute became part of the Association Incorporations Act 1981, thanks to the efforts of the founder: Dr Guy Powles, in 1983.
The institute’s current premises, also known as the “Monash Law Clinics – Clayton”, were opened in 1998, by then Chief Justice of the state of Victoria, Phillips CJ.
Besides the Clayton campus, another premise: “Monash Law Clinics – Melbourne” were opened in 2018, with the aim of providing access to world class law education to the local community, & reducing the overall burden on the state’s judiciary.
