Established in 1938 as New England University College, the University of New England received its independent university status in 1954. Notably, it is an open university. With its main campus located in northern central New South Wales in the Armidale city, the university was the first university of Australia formed outside a state capital city which now holds about 22,300 students pursuing higher education.
The university campuses are located in several areas of Armidale. The university is spread over a land of 74 hectares with its northern campus just 5 km to the northwest of the city center. The campus maintains several buildings including the aged homestead, 'Booloominbah'. Also, The campus is well equipped with first-rate sporting facilities, shops, restaurants, medical facilities, childcare, a post office, and banking facilities. Other than this, the Newling campus of the university is home to the Heritage Centre and other buildings associated with the former Armidale College of Advanced Education.
The university offers over 200 programs with options to study online or on campus. The university offers education to students by maintaining three faculties that together contain nine multi-disciplinary schools. Also, the institution offers scholarships, and prizes every year and provides over $18 million in funding for staff members and students who are involved in the research.
The university carries out primary and practical research in many areas of study. Students and research staff members have a global image through their contributions in areas such as agricultural economics, rural science, linguistics, educational administration, and archaeology. Apart from this, the university offers good accommodation options to its students by maintaining one of the most extensive residential college systems in Australia.
