The college began as a trade school during the formation of Ontario's college system. The initial campuses opened in Sudbury, North Bay, and Sault Ste Marie. Until 1995, it was only a Bilingual institute that offered courses in English and French. In the same year, the courses in French were transferred to the College Boreal.

There are Resident advisors in the dorms to guide them through the rules and regulations of living in the residence. The costs for the two residences vary.
