  • The MDS program was developed by the combined expertise of the UBC departments of Computer Science and Statistics to help meet a growing need for data scientists by producing skilled professionals who can turn data into knowledge
  • Data science is the process of extracting value from that data through reproducible and auditable processes
  • UBC's Master of Data Science program was designed to address this workforce gap by equipping students with the technical skills, practical experience, and most importantly, the confidence to seize opportunities in an ever-expanding field
  • The program structure includes 24 one-credit courses offered in four-week segments. Courses are lab-oriented and delivered in-person with some blended online content

  • Usually a minimum overall average in the B+ range (76% at UBC) OR
  • Applicants must have a four-year Bachelor's Degree or a Master's degree with a First Class/Division 1 (65%) or Very Good (8 on a 10-point scale)
  • At the minimum, the applicant must hold the academic equivalent of a four-year bachelor’s degree from UBC with a minimum B+ (76% at UBC) average in your third and fourth-year courses
  • Prerequisites:
    • One course in programming
    • One course in probability and/or statistics
    • One course in calculus or one course in linear algebra. Completion of a course in both calculus and linear algebra is strongly recommended

If you have a strong record of academic achievement but do not yet meet the UBC English language requirement, you may be eligible for the Conditional Admission Program, which offers English language preparation leading to an undergraduate degree program on UBC’s Vancouver campus for bachelor degree programs in all faculties

  • Score of English proficiency test is required
  • Proof of citizenship by passport
  • Unofficial transcripts for all courses, including but not limited to exchange courses, zero-credit courses and courses completed at an international institution
  • Unofficial degree certificates for any degrees that are not indicated on your transcripts
  • One page letter of intent describing your data science experience and interest
