The institution's roots go back to the start of Kent College after the efforts of Lt. Governor Edmund Fanning and the Legislative Council of Prince Edward Island. The first college building opened in 1820. In 1969, UPEI was started after a merger between Prince of Wales College and St Dunstan's University.
