China Pharmaceutical University (CPU) was established as the National College of Pharmacy in 1936. Prof. Meng Mudi was appointed as the institute's first president. In 1950, the college was renamed as East-China School of Pharmacy. In 1952, it merged with Shantung Christian University's Department of Pharmacy and Soochow University's School of Pharmacy to become East-China College of Pharmacy. The college was renamed as Nanjing College of Pharmacy in 1956 and was given its current name and university status in 1986. The university merged with Jiangsu Pharmaceutical School in October 2001. The Ministry of Education of China has recognized the university. CPU was China's first public institution to offer higher education in the field of pharmacy.
Situated in Nanjing, CPU has two campuses, including Jiangning Campus on the city's southeast outskirts and Xuanwumen Campus in downtown Nanjing. Both the campuses are spread across an area of around 146.6 hectares. The two campuses are equipped with first-rate infrastructure and a plethora of academic, administrative and recreational facilities. They house numerous spacious classrooms, hi-tech laboratories, a huge library, sprawling green areas, and many academic and administrative buildings. With several canteens, cafeterias and dormitories, they also offer students excellent residential and dining facilities. The campuses also provide students with recreational amenities like a sports complex and a great gymnasium.
CPU consists of five independent academic departments and six schools that offer 20 undergraduate, 29 postgraduate, 24 doctoral and 6 post-doctoral fellowship programs in various fields, including medicine, sciences, engineering, management, economics, arts, and law. It houses over 15,000 full-time students and over 900 full-time teachers. The university has bilateral student exchange partnerships with over 30 research institutes and universities in countries like the USA, Italy, UK, Australia, and Japan. It also has collaborations with many academic institutions in over 40 countries worldwide, including France, Germany, and Austria. Some partner universities of CPU include Stanford University in the USA, Queen's University Belfast in the UK, the University of Alberta in Canada, Nagasaki University in Japan and the University of Hong Kong in China.
