Doctor of Medicine - Batch of 2022
4.4
University of Northern Philippines at the apex in Ilocos region.
Tips: There is a big cultural difference since Filipinos demand honesty and punctuality as fundamental etiquette. They are a very jolly, fun-loving bunch of people but are very obedient in what they do. They are quite open to accepting international students and show tremendous support in accommodation. I didn't avail of any scholarship since usually for international students there are None. I am extremely happy, satisfied and fortunate that I was able to study at this university and stay in the Philippines. The quality of education is at par if not better than most medical colleges in India. The quality of patient exposure that I got is at the level of any postgraduate president.
Likes (Student Life): If you want to pursue medicine in its finest form with strict mentoring and full dedication from professors, this is the right place to be. I enjoyed the camps which were conducted on regular occasions. There are a lot of events organized on a yearly basis which include fashion shows, and sports competitions both at university as well as national levels. There are clubs for international students separately as well as other clubs for the welfare of students and even for anti-ragging.
Dislikes (Part time work): Usually, there is no part-time work available for international students since the course itself takes a lot of time out of your schedule. Also off-campus, I didn't explore any opportunities except after coming back to India and finishing the FMGE exam, getting a job was not that difficult.

You need a special work permit if you want a part-time job.
Tips: It is important to be aware of the eligibility requirements before you apply to a medical school, especially if it's outside of your home country. Please ensure you know the application deadline, and if there are application fees. You should make sure your family can support you financially throughout your studies, as well as the costs of relocation and visas, if applicable. Also, if you do get admitted, please keep abreast of the changing NMC rules and regulations regarding foreign medical courses.
Likes (Quality of faculty): I have to say that the quality of the education here is phenomenal. All the teachers are well-educated and practising doctors who are all approachable and welcoming. They also provide us with well-made notes for our reference. On top of that, they let us rotate through the hospitals on their shifts, which gives us a chance to gain real clinical experience. They teach us not only the basics but also the proper ways of interacting with patients.
Dislikes (Part time work): As a student visa holder, you can’t work part-time. That’s because the Philippines considers students to be visitors and requires them to have a special work permit if they want a part-time job. In other words, all you can do is study if you are a student visa holder. That’s because part-time jobs are considered to be working, and those holding student visas are allowed to do no work at all. You can, of course, study as much as you like.

The college is above average and good for studies.
Tips: It's a good place to study, and the atmosphere is good. I did have to deal with a little bit of discrimination from some of my classmates because I'm from another country, but the faculty treated me fine. I did an internship at a hospital set up by the College of Medicine. We've also had short clinical visits to nearby hospitals with different doctors and professors from different subjects. The school is in a nice quiet area, there are some Indian restaurants nearby, and transportation is cheap. The only thing that's not great about the school is the food, and honestly, that's a universal issue. Overall, I'm totally happy with my BS and MD at the University of Northern Philippines.
Likes (Internships): The internship I had at a government hospital in ITRMC involved working with a lot of patients. About 75% of the patients or their bystanders spoke English, which was helpful. It was helpful to have the support of my co-workers and the nurses as well.
Dislikes (Part time work): I can't work part time in the Philippines as a student, which makes this a 1-star experience. Students on student visas can only study. Students on work visas can work, but there's no option for students who want to work part-time, which I feel is a negative.

The quality of education at my college was excellent. It had more practical exposure.
Tips: I had experienced a culture shift. As a foreign student I was able to interact with a lot of people from that country. It helped me grow in my personality development and functional management especially to become self-sufficient. It's easy to get public transportation in the Philippines and it's affordable. Local transportation in the Philippines is diverse and caters to different needs, ranging from affordable daily commutes to more comfortable private transport. But taxies and authorised services like Grab are only available in urban areas. Getting an immigrant visa for the Philippines as an Indian citizen can indeed be a bit challenging as the process involves multiple steps and stringent requirements especially for long-term stays like work, permanent residence or family reunification. However, it is not impossible.

University of Northern Philippines has strong curriculum, and good faculty and facilities.
Tips: The University of Northern Philippines is a state university that allows foreign students to enrol in MD after completing their Pre-med course (BS psychology, BS biology, etc and passing the NMAT exam. The scholarship programmes are not available for foreign students currently in the university. The teaching staff in the college are very friendly and cooperative. The teachers are all renowned in their own fields and will take us to the hospital for clinical exposure. The facilities are all the best in hospitals. Clean and neat environment. Almost everyone in the country knows English, so communication is very easy. The currency rate is only slightly higher than the Indian rupee. Living expenses are also similar to India. There is a wide range of cuisines that are affordable and healthy. Lot of places to see as a tourist. People are very friendly and hospitable. Safety is assured even at night, especially for women. The climate is mild except in the rainy season when there will be natural disasters like floods, and storms. Overall, I am highly satisfied with my experiences.
Likes (Internships): Internship at the ITRMC, Philippines provided rotations at six different departments, which provided a varied view of medical cases and quality care. The teaching staff and resident doctors were dedicated and friendly. The internship program was focused on hands-on experience that involved participants in the majority of medical procedures. There were also conferences each week to discuss cases that were admitted to the hospital. The internship also included exposure to general and minor surgeries.
Dislikes (Part time work): A student visa in the Philippines allows students to participate in part-time work under restricted conditions as long as they have permission from the Philippine Bureau of Immigration. However, finding part-time work can be challenging due to limitations on working hours and visa requirements. It's not recommended for medical students to look for part-time jobs because there's a lack of time to study, and there weren't any on-campus part-time jobs available during my time.

Great university, helpful faculty and diverse campus.
Tips: My programme is more research-focused than just classes. I transitioned from another US university so the cultural shift was minimal. The program provides a guaranteed monthly stipend and full tuition. The annual stipend is 40,000 dollars. Pittsburgh is a small city, so the diversity in people is lacking and there are fewer things to do. But there are plenty of opportunities to do outdoor activities. I have not had any issues with safety in Pittsburgh. Public transportation is available late into the night. People are respectful. Even though fewer people are out on the street at night, I have felt walking around. Shops and restaurants are usually close by 9 pm so there is not much to do at night. Overall, I am pretty satisfied with the education.
Dislikes (Permanent Immigration): The political environment is currently unstable under the 2025 Trump administration. This is making immigration options uncertain. Additionally, from having conversations with other international students who have undergone the immigration process, I've realized that the process is long and expensive, but turns out successful if you have done your research and have provided a good portfolio of your work. I would permanently immigrate given the option.

It is a good college with lots of opportunities to excel
Tips: Check for STEM courses, and apply early for scholarships. Check with seniors who are studying there regarding job sector post-studies. Connect with alumni. There are a lot of cultural socks for students as the culture is quite different from that in India. But you get used to it.

Best research oriented University
Tips: My scholarship is in the process so I might get it and students coming here can also try to get one. University is quite good, the management is really helpful and there are a lot of job opportunities through various on-campus job events. I'm satisfied with the University as it gives me a good study environment.
Likes (Public transportation): PITT students can travel anywhere with the ID card and get many offers included in restaurants. Public transportation is good. The campus is in the centre of the city close to downtown. A lot of tourist attractions nearby the campus itself. You can travel anywhere by bus around the city. Only fewer places need a cab facility.
Dislikes (Permanent Immigration): I would not like to permanently settle in this state but I would want to move to a different one. A good salary with a decent car would be perfect to stay in any place in the United States as it's quite expensive. I couldn't adapt to the food easily it takes time. But overall a good place.
