Opportunities for Growth
Tips: After coming here I learned to be independent, as I have to do everything on my own: earn money, study, cook, and look after my health. I received a scholarship for academic excellence, and I received a total of 2,000 euros. I'm pretty satisfied with my university course and the country. I love my course because it has a very good scope. Renewable energy is growing, and therefore you have a higher chance of getting jobs, especially if you speak German. University life is not like the one we have in India; we just go to the university to attend classes and maybe once in a while to attend any events. It's not as lively as Indian universities. I love Germany because you have the freedom to do whatever you want, and you don't have to pay a big tuition fee to study here, but you can still get a good education. We get a lot of opportunities to grow here; it depends on how well we use it and how SMART we are.
Likes (Part time work): I'm specializing in renewable energies, and I actually got a student assistant job in a company that is closely associated with the university, which is situated in the same city. If you are SMART enough, I think you can get a part-time job in companies like mine in the area because it's particularly famous for its renewable energy. There are also other opportunities for part-time work in the university itself, but it depends on the coursework and depends on how SMART you are. Off-campus part-time jobs are not as hard to find as in other big cities in Germany, but if you know German, it's much easier, as you may get easier jobs; if you don't know German, you mostly get work in warehouses and restaurants.
Dislikes (Student Life): The thing I enjoy the most about my college life is I can choose the subjects that I want to study instead of a fixed coursework; there are many options to choose from. For my course, particularly, there is no batch as such, so you SEE different people in different subjects' classes. You have total freedom to choose whether to attend the class or just to attend the exam. Attendance is not mandatory for the majority of the courses. At the end you just have to get all the credit points to finish your master's. There are many events like summer fest, chit chat with coffee, meeting and speaking with local people, and some traditional parties. But it's completely different from college life in India; we have to always choose to attend different events to meet new people, and I feel like the kind of unity and friendships that we have in Indian college life are not something that we can expect here. There are no such student clubs or communities like what we have in India.

A Wonderful Rollercoaster in Berlin :)
Tips: It's a great university, and I am grateful to be a part of it. However, yes, it's also stressful as one would learn a lot of new things in studies and in life. Living, earning, and studying in a new country have their own ups and downs. I did not avail myself of any scholarships, but there are some and they can be found under DAAD.
Likes (Indian Food): Berlin is an international hub consisting of a wide variety of restaurants from all over the world. However, yes, the food might be hilariously expensive (normal dal for 12 euros). I prefer to cook at home, but the mensa for lunch is a good alternative.
Dislikes (Internships): I rated internships low because HU Berlin operates like a traditional research university—meaning they don't have a placement cell that hands you corporate internships. You have to hunt for companies and apply completely on your own. Professors are super supportive if you ask for academic guidance or reference letters, but career placement isn't their job. The upside is that you can get great hands-on experience on campus by working as a HiWi (student assistant) alongside researchers and professors in your department.

A well-rounded academic and cultural experience with a vibrant student life in Berlin.
Tips: I joined the programme with a DAAD fellowship. We had meetups every 6 months where I met other students with the same scholarships from different South East Asian countries which was a great way to connect. Berlin has a large Indian community and I was actively involved in the cultural events and sports. I was also initially living with German flatmates which involved some cultural adjustments but over time I adapted comfortably.
Likes (Indian Food): Due to the wide variety and high number of restaurants in Berlin, there is more competition. Therefore, the prices are reasonable and affordable to students compared to smaller towns and cities where the availability of Indian restaurants is not much. On average, you can find at least one Indian restaurant every 1-2 km in Berlin. I generally prefer cooking at home but I occasionally eat outside too. University cafeterias are also a convenient and affordable option for regular meals.
Dislikes (Safety): Berlin is a large metropolitan city with a very diverse population, including many immigrants and homeless people. Therefore, there are occasional safety concerns, like theft. For eg, bicycle theft is quite common in Berlin. Students are therefore asked to use strong blocks and be cautious. Apart from campus security, the university provides controller access to certain buildings, student ID validation, and CCTV in common areas; however, there have been some incidents where unauthorized people have disguised themselves and entered the building. In some cases, the laptops and personal belongings have been stolen during lunch break when the rooms were attended.
