Good city Paderborn and Good university
Tips: The initial few days will be depressing; I cried too. Homesickness will hit. But it is all a part of life, and it will pass. I did not get any scholarships, and I never applied for them either. But Paderborn is a good city; there are lots of Indians here as well. In terms of culture, it is a bit different here. But you will adapt to it.
Likes (Student Life): Student Life is very fun here. No one judges you, no uniform, no fixed attendance criteria. There are lots of fun events that keep happening throughout the campus. I participate in them to get to know more about the culture. There is an Indian Student group here as well, so Indian events keep happening too.
Dislikes (Internships): Paderborn is not a very big city, but there are a few companies which does industrial real-world work here. Getting an internship here is very tough; I myself could not get into companies even though I have work experience. But some of my friends got into them easily without referrals. I study Computer Science, so getting a job should be easier.

Life at Paderborn University
Tips: Those subjects are extremely difficult. Understanding of the basics is extremely needed. A strong understanding of math is needed. Also, a degree program may take more than two years. Complete so university degree programs are flexible. I didn't avail of any scholarship, but there are scholarship programs that students can apply for. I am in my third semester, and I am satisfied with my studies here at Paderborn University.
Likes (Public transportation): I loved my life here in Paderborn. I came from India with zero friends, but now people are so friendly and approachable. I have so many friends here who feel like family. Paderborn University has multiple clubs for students that keep organizing programs for fun. This helped me settle down in an unknown social setup and also gave me enough international exposure.
Dislikes (Quality of faculty): My faculty is extremely knowledgeable, supportive, and approachable. They explain the topics so clearly via slides and give us assignments. Every subject has course achievements to finish. This clarifies the concepts even more clearly. Professors are extremely helpful.

Life in Paderborn - Boon or Bane?
Tips: Look, if your ultimate goal is to skip out on theory and instantly land a cushy corporate job in the tech industry, the University of Paderborn is probably going to disappoint you. This place is an absolute research powerhouse. If you are trying to set yourself up for a PhD or dive deep into advanced Computer Science academia, it is easily one of the top institutions in Germany. But for a straightforward corporate route, it’s a tough match.
The city of Paderborn itself is small, scenic, and cozy, but you need to know that English will only get you so far here. The local community speaks very little English, so coming here without learning German beforehand is basically setting yourself up for a massive communication barrier. Knowing the language is also your only real ticket to building a solid social circle on campus, which can be tough since the vibe isn't the best fit if you're socially anxious. The academic side is nothing short of brutal. The course structures are incredibly tough, the workload is heavy and passing your exams is never going to be a walk in the park. If you think you can just breeze through with minimum effort to clear your papers, you're in for a rough time. Your grades and performance directly dictate whether you get a look-in for a research assistant position, a decent master's thesis topic, or a solid academic role later. It is a grueling, uphill climb on a very hilly campus—but if you have a strong head on your shoulders and actually want a heavy intellectual challenge, completing a master's degree here feels incredibly rewarding.

UPB Review- I had a good time. Completely Worth the time and effort.
Tips: Connect with people who are coming along with you. Get your doubts cleared with senior students. Understand the course structure and plan things in advance. I am satisfied with my university and the course. I got to do technical part-time jobs, and that was the best part.
Likes (Student Life): The student communities are good. Lots of events take place regularly. Students enjoy themselves a lot and build connections. I was part of the Indian community; it was fun. We organize a Diwali event and intercultural events every year. Also, other gatherings. One of the best Indian communities in Germany.
Dislikes (Internships): The course does not have a mandatory internship option. Getting voluntary internships is a bit difficult in comparison. Although there are opportunities for technical part-time jobs. Planning things in advance usually helps a lot. I would recommend a part-time job instead of an internship.

A Great University for Learning, Research, and Career Growth
Tips: If you're coming to Paderborn for Computer Science, you need to lose the expectation that professors are going to hold your hand. The independent learning curve here hits you like a truck, and if you aren't self-motivated to grind through the heavy theory and coding assignments on your own, you’ll fall behind fast. Also, don't buy into the myth that you can totally get away with just English. Sure, the CS modules are taught in English, but trying to navigate the local supermarket, deal with the Ausländerbehörde (foreigners office), or land a decent part-time gig without basic German is a massive headache.
Financially, scholarships are incredibly rare, so don't count on them. I had to pay for literally everything myself by working HiWi gigs on campus and scraping together random part-time jobs. Start hunting for open slots the day you arrive, because every single tech student in Paderborn is fighting for the exact same roles. Living here is a major cultural adjustment—the German obsession with planning everything weeks in advance and their strict respect for personal space can feel pretty cold at first. But looking back, I’m totally satisfied with the move. The CS department has serious research backing and deep ties to local tech firms, so if you actually use the labs and network, it’s a solid launchpad for a tech career.
Likes (Safety): I gave safety a 4 because Paderborn is honestly just a super quiet, low-crime town. Since it’s on the smaller side, it doesn’t have that overwhelming, chaotic vibe of a massive city. You can walk back to your apartment from campus at midnight without feeling sketchy at all, and you barely see any trouble. The local cops are actually pretty efficient and show up fast if there’s a problem. Honestly, I haven't run into a single sketchy situation the entire time I've lived here.
Dislikes (Indian Food): Since Paderborn is a pretty small student town, it completely lacks the massive, cheap food scene you get in bigger student hubs like Aachen or Göttingen. That's exactly why I gave the Indian food options a low 2-star rating. Honestly, if you want a decent taste of home, a basic meal at the few Indian spots in town will easily run you 16 to 20 euros a head, which completely destroys a student budget. Because of that, I just cook at home most days and grab my spices from the small local Asian/Indian grocery shops. When I am too lazy to cook and don't want to eat at the campus Mensa, my only cheap options are the endless Döner and falafel pocket joints or quick pizza slices scattered around the center.

It is one of the top research based university in Germany for the computer science branch.
Tips: The university is research-oriented. Since there are many students coming to apply for accommodation, you will get an acceptance letter. Apply for a working student job under your faculty. The chances of getting it are high. Try to apply for a thesis as soon as you meet the requirements under the faculty where you did your project, seminar, and more than 3 subjects.
Likes (Safety): It's been 3 years in Paderborn, and I haven't experienced any danger. I can go out alone at 3 am without any worries. It's especially safe for girls. The police are very responsive if there are any issues. I live near the university, so I felt safe.
Dislikes (Internships): We don't have a compulsory internship at our university. If we apply, it will be our volunteer work. If you are willing to do an internship, go ahead, but while applying to a company, ask whether it's compulsory or not. If not, the chances of getting in are lower. So I rated it as 2. Instead, join as a work-student, which is similar to gaining experience.

Tips: Yes, there was a cultural shift for sure, but I would say the transition was rather smooth. There is a large Indian community here who are all very helpful, and they made my early days quite easy. No, I didn't get any scholarship. I would say I am very satisfied with my choices for my university, course, and country. One thing that I would suggest to others looking to come to Germany is to try and invest more time learning the German language, as that's what helps you immensely in your day-to-day life, and I would say it has a heavy impact when it comes to looking for full-time job roles, as they do filter out candidates based on their German language proficiency.
Likes (Indian Food): There are 2-3 Indian restaurants in the city; also, there's a store called SNS that sells Indian spices and other food items, so one has access to everything needed to be able to cook the same meals that they did back home. I prefer cooking myself.
Dislikes (Internships): I knocked the rating down because Paderborn doesn’t really have big MNCs or tech companies partnering directly with the uni to hand out internships. You're basically left on your own to hunt for roles, send out cold applications, and handle the whole job search yourself. The one saving grace, though, is that we have the Fraunhofer research institute sitting right on the same campus. For a computer science student, that is huge because a ton of us end up landing working student positions (Werkstudent) over there. So while industry connections from the uni side are pretty lacking, having a massive research hub next door gives you a solid backup option to get experience.

Tips: Moving here was a smooth transition, though one should definitely learn the German language beforehand to communicate easily with local people daily. I didn't get any scholarship myself, but students can easily apply through DAAD. Overall, I am very much satisfied with the university, course quality, and living in this country.
Likes (Value for money): Because it is a public university, it is completely tuition-free for international students. There is only a minor semester contribution fee required, which is incredibly valuable since it fully covers the cost of public transportation across the entire region in Germany. This makes the overall return on investment exceptional for anyone studying on a student budget.
Dislikes (Indian Food): Most restaurants serve very limited Indian food options, and the authentic taste is often missing. Because of this, I usually prefer to cook my own meals at home. Eating out frequently is also quite expensive and not sustainable for a student budget on a daily basis.

Tips: It is difficult to adjust in the first semester. The courses are very practical and not theory-based like in India. The university has limited options for student jobs as researchers. The course is tough. In computer engineering there are 4 mandatory courses. 2 of them are quite tough. The university and infrastructure are decent.
Likes (Public transportation): Paderborn city is small and well-connected by public transportation. The university is quite centrally located. The ticket is included in the semester contribution. The Deutschland ticket can be used to travel anywhere in Germany for local buses and trains.
Dislikes (Internships): It is difficult to apply for internships in the companies near the university since internships are not mandatory. The companies prefer students who need mandatory internships for completion of their course. Not many companies are located in Paderborn. You will have to travel to bigger cities for student jobs and internships.

Tips: Just a heads up, the local food and how insanely strict the rules are out here will probably give you a massive culture shock at first. It's definitely a weird adjustment, but you honestly get used to the whole vibe faster than you think. It takes a little time to get used to, but honestly, it’s not that bad because there are a ton of Indian restaurants and grocery shops right around the corner from campus. Having those nearby makes it super easy to grab a familiar meal or track down home ingredients whenever you start feeling homesick, which completely saves you during your first few months. Also, the main difference is how we behave in a public space, like speaking friendly or loudly might be normal, but here you should respect other people's personal space. 2. I did not avail myself of any scholarship. 3. The university is awesome; my course was completely English-taught, so I did not face any difficulties, and the teaching staff is supportive.
Likes (Permanent Immigration): The city is quite small and friendly, so in case you want to settle permanently, the rent is cheaper than compared to other big cities. Also, the commute to other parts is really good. There is no hassle with the immigration office or the appointments.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): Generally, you don't need a company to provide you any kind of sponsor document; you can get the work visa or the blue card based on your job contact. The main jobs are all IT or computer science-related. Companies offer around 40K-55K Euro based on your position and experience.

Vigorous curriculum and great student life.
Tips: The university itself is really good in terms of studies, but it is the job scenario that anyone should be careful of. Any courses that are being offered are really great compared to India, where you might not get this much detailed studies and won't learn what you can learn here.
Likes (Safety): Paderborn city itself is one of the safest cities compared to other metropolitan cities such as Berlin, Frankfurt or Munich. I personally never heard about anyone getting discriminated against or being harassed in here. These things are not that common here.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): I saw my friends completing their master's and still not getting jobs for 1 or even 2 years. I mean, eventually you will get a job, but be prepared to do some odd jobs even after studying, as it is not guaranteed that you will get a job when you just finish.

Tips: Be prepared for a minimum of 3 years. There are no scholarships available. I felt stressed and spent almost 4 years here, completing my Master's and earning 55,000 euros annually. My friends who spent 4 years working in India, gained experience and then came directly for work, are earning 70,000 euros. I am not satisfied with the university.
Likes (Safety): Apartments are cheap and good, with good facilities and friendly surroundings, all within walking distance of the university. I had very positive experiences with the campus and apartments, as they were clean and cozy, and the city is beautiful.
Dislikes (Student Life): The course structure is demanding. There are many assignments and the subjects are challenging. Students need to dedicate a lot of time to studying, completing one subject per semester over four years. I wouldn't recommend this university if you're looking to enjoy and travel. While you can make friends and participate in events completing a Master's degree might be difficult.

Tips: Be prepared for self-study. Lectures may not always cover everything. Also some admin processes can be slow, so plan ahead. I felt a shift especially in communication style. People are more direct here and everything runs on time. I adapted gradually and now feel comfortable. I didn’t get any scholarship, but there are options like DAAD or university specific ones. The course is relevant and practical the university has good resources and the country offers good job prospects after graduation.
Likes (Post study jobs): There are good job opportunities after graduation especially in tech and engineering but the process can be slow and language skills sometimes matter. Many medium and large companies in Germany offer visa sponsorship especially in the IT automotive and finance sectors but not all small companies do. Typical roles include Software Developer, Data Analyst, Electrical Engineer and Business Analyst. Starting salaries typically range from 45,000 to 60,000 euros per year depending on position and experience.
Dislikes (Indian Food): There are very limited options for food from my home country. Even when available, the taste is not authentic, and the quality is inconsistent. There are mostly German, Italian and Turkish restaurants nearby. Prices vary: Budget options, such as Doner and Pizza, cost around 5-10 euros, mid-range options, such as Pasta, Schnitzel, are 10-20 euros, and higher-end places are 25 euros and above. I prefer cooking at home. It's more affordable, and I can prepare food that tastes closer to what I'm used to.

Interesting learning experience, but not easy.
Tips: The courses are not extremely difficult, but it's also not possible to pass without putting in any effort. You have to work pretty hard to get very good grades. A major positive change is that I am no longer afraid of speaking up and asking questions during lectures. The professors were very encouraging and receptive to even the most minor doubts. Most of the internship opportunities I've found are from the career fair on campus, rather than the student jobs portal. The career fair is hosted once or twice a year on campus. Also, I've had some luck finding internships on LinkedIn. Overall, I am quite satisfied with my experiences.
Likes (Quality of faculty): Most of the professors I’ve interacted with are very approachable and passionate about the subjects they teach. I found almost all of the courses I attended to be very interesting. However, the professors also have high expectations, so be sure to attend the first few lectures to see if the course is the right fit for you.

Tips: It is known for its computer science course and they want credible students. You need to put in the effort for the experience to be fruitful. It's not at all like the indian system, so you will need to adjust to the German education system. Be prepared for that.

Safety is as important to the other citizens as it is to you. Make sure to remember that you are in a new country and even in the safest places, your safety is in your own hands.
Dislikes (Indian Food): You'd mostly find only German food, which is basically bread and meat. But you have Indian stores in the vicinity so you will be able to pick up vegetables and masalas to cook on your own. The more you're used to cooking, the better. My university life transition from India to Germany
Tips: It took me a while to get adjusted to life here, as it is different from India. I got to know about student initiatives, and I joined them. From then on, my life was different. There are different scholarship options available for students. Every year, they can check and apply.
Likes (Public transportation): While city is walkable and it's rare to use a bus unless you are staying a bit far from the university. University is located in the Center of the city and all the buildings are Next to each other. Also as a student you get Deutschland ticket where you can use it to travel whole country.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): There are a lot of architectural and civil engineering companies around if a student can speak German they are very high chances of getting a job directly here if not it is a bit struggle to find a job in the city

Likes (Value for money): Value for money gets a full 5/5 because studying at Bauhaus Weimar gives you top-tier German education for virtually no tuition. You only pay a basic semester fee (Semesterbeitrag), which already covers regional transit. Renting a room in Weimar—whether in Studierendenwerk dorms or a shared flat (WG)—is wildly cheaper than in cities like Munich or Berlin. Getting full access to design labs, architecture studios, and research facilities at a fraction of typical international study costs makes the ROI unbeatable.
Dislikes (Indian Food): I gave Indian food a 2/5 simply because Weimar is a small town in Thuringia where truly authentic food is hard to find. The couple of Indian restaurants here heavily hand-adjust their spices and recipes to match local German tastes. A basic meal out runs around €10–€20, which adds up fast. You'll find standard kebab spots, Italian places, and basic cafes, but if you want proper comfort food that actually tastes like home, you're better off getting spices from an Asian market and cooking in your apartment.

Tips: Before joining Bauhaus-Uni, you need to know that learning here is heavily project-based. Professors don't just lecture you; you're expected to spend endless hours in design studios, labs, or workshops working on practical, hands-on tasks. Weimar is a small, quiet cultural city—not a bustling metropolis like Berlin—so social life mostly revolves around your classmates and studio projects.
While English gets you through international Master’s courses, learning German is pretty much required for daily life, dealing with local landlords, and integrating into the town. On the money side, tuition is free save for the €300 semester fee (which covers your Thüringen transit pass), and rent in Weimar is very affordable. Look into DAAD scholarships early if you need extra monthly stipends, but overall, it's a great spot if you thrive on creative independence.

Tips: Be open to the culture; don't stay in your own bubble. Explore different opportunities provided by the university. Join initiatives to get high chances of scholarship. Make use of Erasmus and short-term blended intensive programs. This is a small university, but the number of opportunities is insane; it's up to the students on how to grab them.
Likes (Quality of faculty): They are really open and accessible. Bauhaus has a unique style of teaching that can be only experienced here. It is project- and assignment-based learning. Only a university with 4 different faculties, especially art, architecture, civil, and media.
Dislikes (Internships): It really depends on the job market and the courses you take. My course didn't have many opportunities nearby, and often people had to move to different states to do it. We don't have mandatory internships. Many companies don't know what digital engineering is, so it's also a problem while applying for jobs.

Good international experience with a practical learning environment
Tips: Students should be prepared to take responsibility for their studies and manage their time independently. The academic environment is international, and the course involves technical and practical work, so having a basic interest in programming and engineering concepts is helpful. It is also good to arrange accommodation and other formalities early.
I did not avail of any scholarship. I am currently funding my studies and living expenses through my own financial resources. I would recommend students to check the university and external scholarship opportunities early, as some applications have specific deadlines and eligibility requirements.
Likes (Value for money): Top rating for value for money simply because you get a world-renowned Bauhaus education for zero tuition fees—you only pay the basic Semesterbeitrag (around €300). That fee covers your regional transit ticket across Thuringia, which alone saves you hundreds. Plus, living costs in Weimar are way more affordable than cities like Munich or Berlin, yet you still get access to top-tier design labs, media studios, and 24/7 library resources. For the quality of hands-on project work and international atmosphere you get, it’s an incredible return on investment.
Dislikes (Internships): I gave internships a low score because Weimar is a small, historic town with almost no local industry or corporate presence. While Bauhaus-Uni has basic career counseling, you’re basically on your own when it comes to landing a Werkstudent position or internship. You have to cold-apply to firms in bigger cities like Berlin, Leipzig, or Frankfurt with very little active placement help or direct networking events from the university. I wish the faculty had stronger industry pipelines and course-specific corporate connections instead of leaving students to figure it all out independently.

Bauhaus for internationals and experiences in the Bauhaus
Tips: There was, of course, a cultural shift, especially in the course curriculum, but professors will make sure that you follow the course well. Never shy away from asking questions whenever unclear. The International Student Council is also very helpful, and try to socialize with people, especially in winter. Although I did not avail myself of any scholarships, there are possibilities. One can apply for DAAD scholarships yearly. Germany is a beautiful country, and Bauhaus has the best professors, who have been experienced in the field for more than 2 decades; the course curriculum is always designed to meet industry standards.
Likes (Value for money): It covers the Deutschlandticket, museums, and other libraries in Thuringia that can also be visited for free. As someone who often travels in Germany, having a Deutschlandticket is hassle-free and affordable for students. I have also availed myself to visit a couple of UNESCO heritage sites for free.
Dislikes (Indian Food): There are no Indian grocery stores in the city; however, they are available in a nearby city, which is 30 minutes away from Weimar. But there are a couple of Indian restaurants in the city, which are pretty reliable. I mostly cook for myself, or I eat in Mensa (Mensa serves Indian dishes at times).

Strong academics, smooth transition, one tip: learn German
Tips: The courses here are well-structured, and professor support is genuinely great. I came from a naval architecture and shipbuilding background. The transition wasn't difficult, though there were differences in food, culture, and a more self-directed, research-oriented approach to education. There is no tuition fee. I worked as a Hiwi (student assistant) to cover the living expenses. German language skills also matter beyond the classroom, even in English-thought programs, especially for part-time or post-graduation jobs. I am very satisfied with my university, course, and time in Germany.

University that bring joy and love to your life
Tips: Students should know that they should focus on learning the German language. They should be confident and should be expressive. The students coming here should not panic and ask for help from anyone without hesitation because the people here are very kind and helpful. I didn't get any scholarships. I came on my own The course is very good and very demanding Overall I will recommend you all.
Likes (Public transportation): The transportation system in weimar is excellent; in every 10-15 minutes we have buses, the buses are comfortable and are time-punctual as well The transportation charges are covered under the academic semester fee of the university, which is 320 euros per semester approximately.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): There are many companies that are available here but there is a problem of language, like, as a student, you need to learn the German language at least at a B2 level; the job roles and salary packages vary and are very diverse But I can guarantee it's very good.

Easy going, academic, less opportunistic
Tips: The first thing is you will feel the biggest cultural shock: none will talk to you even if you cry, laugh, or whatever. But once you are comfortable and you know how things work, you will be comfortable. I am so much more satisfied with the country; it was my fault that 'I didn't learn German beforehand at least till the B2 level. I am not very satisfied with my university's honesty; the course name is also like, you have to explain to everyone what you are doing, but the content of the course is really technical and computer science, machine learning, and security-oriented.
Likes (Public transportation): Public transportation is really good here. There are several buses running with a good time difference, including trains and all. That's free because we get a Deutschland ticket from our university. Only ICE is something you can't travel with. For buses, trams, and trains anywhere in Germany, you can travel for free. It is very convenient.
Dislikes (Internships): I gave internships a low rating because the local job market around Weimar is practically dead right now, and the university makes things worse by cutting back on student assistant roles (HiWi positions), claiming they’re completely out of budget. When you ask around for help, everyone just gives you the generic 'keep applying' speech without offering any actual leads or connections. Even alumni or people from your own home country who managed to land solid roles won’t lift a finger to refer you.
You have to accept early on that you are completely on your own out here. By all means, network and be friendly with everyone you meet, but never rely on anyone to throw you a lifeline. You're way better off looking for jobs outside Weimar in the bigger German cities, so stop waiting around for a favor and just spam applications on your own.
