The Braunschweig University of Technology is the oldest technical university in Germany. Initially, it was known as Collegium Carolinum when it opened in 1745. This university is a part of TU9, which is a society that includes the most renowned technical universities in Germany. Braunschweig University has a research airport all to itself. It is ranked amidst the top engineering universities in Germany. Being very research-centric, the university collaborates with Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research, German Aerospace Center, National Metrology Institute of Germany, and several Fraunhofer Institutes.

The Braunschweig University of Technology concentrates majorly on research. Its researches are carried out mostly in 4 areas- Metrology, Infections and Therapeutics, Future City, and Mobility. At Metrology, LENA (the Laboratory for Emerging Nanometrology and Analytics) has been investigating along with the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt. At Infections and Therapeutics, there is the Braunschweig Integrated Center of Systems Biology (BRICS) that combines biology with information technology, engineering, and natural sciences. Strategies against harmful microorganisms are developed with the help of Leibniz Institute DSMZ and the Helmholtz Center for Infection Research. Scientists from the university are developing smart concepts to come up with efficient Future Cities. They are also working towards a mobility system that will be multimodal. Researches are concentrated on aerospace technology, the automotive sector, and rail technology. Apart from this, the university has other research centres. They are the Battery Lab Factory (BLB), Braunschweig Integrated Center of Systems Biology (BRICS), Laboratory for Emerging Nanometrology and Analytics (LENA), Automotive Research Center Niedersachsen (NFF), Aeronautics Research Center Niedersachsen (NFL), and Center of Pharmaceutical Engineering (PVZ).

The Braunschweig University of Technology has 6 faculties. Some of the faculties are further divided into numerous departments. All the faculties are divided into various institutes. The Carl-Friedrich-Gau Faculty has the Department of Mathematics, Department of Economics and Business Administration, and the Department of Computer Science. The Faculty of Civil Engineering, Architecture, and Environmental Sciences has the Department of Environmental Science and Civil Engineering, and the Department of Architecture. The Braunschweig University of Technology has 4 other faculties; The Faculty of Educational Sciences and Humanities, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, the Faculty of Life Sciences, and the Faculty of Information Technology, Electrical Engineering, and Physics.
