Tips: If you're heading to the University of Siegen for this track, you need to know exactly what you're signing up for. The curriculum leans incredibly hard into theoretical physics. You are going to learn intense topics like electromagnetic field theory, lightwave technology, and semiconductor physics. While they do throw in some analog, digital, and semiconductor design courses with practical assignments, the bulk of your sanity will be spent on heavy, abstract theory before you finish up with your Master’s project and thesis. You do get to pick five electives to tailor things a bit, but don't expect a hands-on, industry-style coding boot camp—this is old-school German academic rigor.
The exam system here is a massive culture shock if you're coming from the Indian education system. Everything is strictly offline, usually a tight two-hour grind for 100 marks. If you're used to writing long, fluff-filled abstract answers to claw back partial credit, forget it. The professors here want short, mathematically perfect answers. To make it worse, the passing bar is brutal—usually around 50% to 60%, which is way higher than what we are used to back home.
On the financial side, Siegen is actually a blessing. It’s way cheaper than living in a mega-city like Munich or Frankfurt. You can easily survive on around 600 Euros a month if you aren't splurging, especially since rent for a student spot runs pretty low, around 250 to 300 Euros. The catch is the local job market. Because Siegen is a smaller hill town, finding a typical part-time retail or warehouse gig can be tough. Your best bet is to hustle right on campus. Don't be shy—email or directly approach professors to ask for HiWi (student research assistant) positions. They constantly need help with administrative or lab tasks, and it's by far the best way to earn money while keeping your focus on your studies.

Even if your master's program is entirely in English, navigating daily life, dealing with local landlords, and landing a decent job afterward requires you to actively pick up the local tongue. Academically, the technical depth here is intense; the courses don't just skim the surface, so you need a genuine appetite for heavy theory and independent research.
The biggest financial perk is that there are absolutely zero tuition fees. Instead, you just pay a basic semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag), which is a bare-minimum fee that actually covers your administrative costs and hooks you up with a semester transit ticket for the entire state. Finally, if your goal is to bridge the gap between R&D and industry, Siegen is actually a solid launchpad. The university has tight connections with local medium-sized engineering and manufacturing firms across the NRW region, meaning there's a steady stream of thesis projects and research assistant roles if you’re willing to network.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): It depends on your course. In my case (Master's in Nanotechnology), there were not many companies willing to sponsor the visa, but still there are chances. Good university with good research
Tips: Look, the biggest trap at Siegen—especially if you're doing a tough tech degree like Computer Science, AI, or Engineering—is letting your part-time job completely hijack your schedule. A lot of international students arrive, freak out about bills, and immediately start grinding long hours at random warehouse or delivery gigs. But the German academic system will absolutely destroy you if you try to wing it. If you start skipping lectures or skipping out on the weekly problem sets (Übungsblätter), you are going to get completely obliterated when exam phase rolls around.
The courses here are heavily theoretical and require serious independent prep. You need to treat your studies like a full-time job and keep the side hustle strictly on the side. Make use of the Fachschaft (student student council) for old exam scripts, and actually show up to the tutorials to ask questions when you get stuck. Siegen is a quiet, hilly student town, so there aren't massive distractions anyway. Use that to your advantage, manage your hours strictly from day one, and prioritize passing your modules over making a few extra euros. Failing an exam and having to retake a whole semester costs way more in the long run.

Tips: The number one thing you need to understand before coming to Siegen is that everything relies on your own hustle. The German system is huge on self-study, so if you're expecting professors to chase you down or hand you passing grades, you’re in for a shock. You have to be proactive, study hard on your own, and actually make an effort to connect with professors if you want to land research opportunities or hear about working student jobs. Getting a Werkstudent role or a research assistant position completely depends on you reaching out and showing you're capable.
Money-wise, the uni has this awesome scholarship deal where you can basically get half your semester fees back. Honestly, it's a total lifesaver for making your cash stretch. As for the actual classes, I'm really glad I chose this course—the structure is solid. Siegen itself is a pretty quiet, hilly student town, so it's a bit of a trek to get around, but if you're independent and don't mind putting in the work, you'll honestly love it here.

Excellent university for Internation student who already knows German language.
Tips: Learn German at least B1-B2. Because it's a small German city and usually very few people speak English. No part-time jobs if you don't know German. University is free of cost. Needs to pay around 300 euro per semester, but it includes a semester ticket. You can travel throughout Germany with that ticket (not on ICE (Intercity Express)).
Likes (Permanent Immigration): If you get a full-time job and salary around 50k euro per year, you can get permanent residency after 21 months. It's best for settlement, but taxes are too high. If you are single and not having any children, you have to give almost half of your salary to the government. This needs to be considered while looking for permanent settlement.
Dislikes (Public transportation): No public transportation after 12 am. There are no Strassenbahn, U-bahn, S-bahn, or ICE (like in Munich or Frankfurt) at Siegen railway station; the only option is the regional express. Two big stations are nearby Frankfurt, 2 hours from Siegen; all trains and flights are possible from there. and Cologne is 1.5 hours from Siegen. Also, all trains and airports are there.

Less Stress Than I Expected, More Learning Than I Imagined
Tips: Moving out here to Siegen was definitely a massive shock to the system at first. Dealing with the language barrier and trying to navigate the absolute nightmare that is German bureaucracy took some serious getting used to. Culturally, people here are intensely private, hyper-punctual, and very independent, which was a total 180 from what I grew up with back home. It takes a few months to finally find your feet. Thankfully, the university itself is super welcoming, and honestly, hanging out and trauma-bonding with other international students is what makes the whole transition so much easier. On the financial side, no, I didn't get any scholarships during my time here—I had to fund the whole thing myself. But looking back at everything, I'm still incredibly satisfied with how it all turned out both for my personal growth and the academics.
Likes (Safety): I gave safety a high rating because, honestly, living and studying in Siegen feels incredibly secure. Apart from the standard campus security, Germany as a whole is just a very safe place to navigate. I’ve never felt weird using public transport here, even when I'm catching a late-night bus or train back to my flat. The university sets you up with all the necessary emergency contacts and counseling info from day one, and the campus infrastructure is always kept in solid shape.
The only real trade-off—and why it’s not a flawless paradise—is that Siegen is pretty small. If you're looking for a wild nightlife scene or massive entertainment options, you're going to have to hop on a train to Cologne or Frankfurt because things get quiet here. Plus, the winter weather can get super gloomy, cold, and rainy, which takes some serious getting used to if you aren't prepared for it. But in terms of pure peace of mind and personal safety, it’s a massive win.
Dislikes (Part time work): 1) Getting a part-time job is hard because most of the jobs require the German language. However, you can still find a part-time job on an English basis. But communication during the work requires basic German. Therefore, it's quite hard to get part-time jobs. 2) Studying while doing jobs is kind of hard, but with proper time management, you can do it. Overall, people in Germany believe in work-life balance. So it works; it doesn't affect the study. 3) average pay, between 1000 and 1300 euros.

Tips: If you're coming to the University of Siegen, you need to know that breaking into the local German culture can take some serious time—it definitely did for me—but you absolutely have to throw yourself into it if you want to experience a completely different side of life. Overall, I’ve been really happy with my time here because the German uni system gives you a massive amount of flexibility to map out your own studies, pick up part-time work, and figure out your career at your own pace. I didn't land any scholarships, so I had to hustle hard and juggle a few different minijobs just to keep cash flowing and cover my monthly expenses. Honest Review of Uni Siegen
Tips: German language C1 is required for getting jobs. B1 is not enough. IT jobs are at high risk. The university is very good. Courses are amazing. Professors are highly experienced. The campus is spread across the town. Siegen is a hill city. Mensa food is fine. There are a lot of activities happening on campus.
Likes (Safety): People in Siegen are good. A lot of the South Indian community is there. It is very safe at night as well. There are a lot of elderly people and students everywhere. There are a lot of international people all around Siegen. I never had a bad experience regarding safety.
Dislikes (Permanent Immigration): There are barely any full-time job openings in Germany. If you don't speak fluent German, you won't be entertained. But if I had a chance to settle in Germany, I would. Language is a must in Germany. The companies reply very late, and the Rathaus is also very slow. Everything happens on paper only.

Tips: This college has a good name in field of automation and robotics. If one is interested in any of these fields they should definitely go for it. Since, it is a public university, it is manageable financially and I have received a scholarship here. As of now, I am somewhat satisfied.
Likes (Value for money): I have scholarship, I don't have to pay any fees. It is a public college and hence I don't pay any fees. In college sometimes you might feel lectures are a bit boring but laboratories are a good learning. There are so many benefits of being a college student.
Dislikes (Public transportation): The public transportation system is not good. It is not as reliable as it should be. While there are some buses and train lines that connect Siegen with other cities as well but they are often late or cancelled. There will always be a limitation of public transportation.

Tips: Learn German and go deep into the courses you take here. Got Deutschlandstipendium, 300 euro / month, applied via university website—with excellent grades, volunteering experience, and community-oriented projects, you can get it, but only 5-10 of 195 Indian students got this in 2025. Well satisfied.
Likes (Safety): Germany is known for safety. The police team was very fast, and for emergency hospital issues, ambulances are very, very fast. Even if you close your bag, you can find it, but not your cycle. Germans are very harmless, I believe, and very pathetic.
Dislikes (Internships): Career advisors always help you and guide you on how to apply for jobs. No campus placements like India. Take courses that have compulsory internships; my course doesn't have one. Also, your internships are mostly full-time, I guess, so only during university breaks can you do them as per the rules.

Tips: Yes, this city has affected me in so many ways. First of all, everyone loves rules here. No breaking laws, especially traffic rules and cleanliness Learning German is a necessity for entering the job market. Professors will guide you and help you a lot. Yes, there are scholarships available. I am quite satisfied.
Likes (Safety): Göttingen is a student city, so everyone here is friendly, kind, and understands English, for starters. There is a strict police department for any crimes The only problem is the commute during late hours, so one has to be prepared for that. It's advisable to not roam alone in the city after midnight.
Dislikes (Internships): I rated internships low because out here in Göttingen, your actual technical skills completely take a backseat to the German language. It’s the ultimate gatekeeper. Look, the university tries to help by putting on career fairs, running workshops, and offering career services, but honestly, all of that becomes pretty useless if you aren't fluent. When it comes down to actual hiring, companies only care if you can communicate with their clients in German. You could be an absolute genius at your subject, but the moment a role requires client interaction, you're locked out if you only speak English. It makes the job hunt incredibly frustrating because language skills end up mattering way more than your actual academic talent.

Tips: The biggest thing you need to realize before coming to Göttingen is that the university leaves you completely to your own devices. It’s entirely independent learning, so if your time management is messy, you’re going to struggle hard. Academically, the transition isn't terrible because the course is super flexible and research-focused, and the professors really know their stuff, but the actual culture shock is the real hurdle. People here are brutally direct, hyper-punctual, and obsessed with rules, which is a massive shift from home.
Also, do yourself a massive favor and learn basic German before you get here. It makes everyday life ten times easier, and honestly, trying to land part-time work or a decent internship without it is nearly impossible. On the financial side, I didn't get any scholarships, so I’m funding everything out of my own pocket. Because of that, I’ve been hunting hard for HiWi positions on campus and local internships just to cover my daily expenses and get some solid experience on my CV. Germany as a whole is awesome for cheap education and great transit, but your entire experience here hinges on how well you adapt and learn the language.

There are not many industries located in Göttingen.
Tips: University of Göttingen has been a great experience for me so far. The wide variety of international exposure with people from all over the world has helped me a lot in shaping me both academically and personally. The international office at the university has been pretty friendly as they help you initially in settling down and help with all the administrative stuff like city registration and housing. The cultural shift can feel quite huge at first, but the transition was smooth. Most of the people in Göttingen speak English and are quite helpful which makes day to day life a lot easier. I was not fortunate enough to receive a scholarship but I managed to get some part time jobs which I balanced along with my studies and helped for the entire duration of my stay here in Göttingen. Part-time opportunities are very common, especially in universities or Max Planck institutes which provide a unique opportunity to learn alongside earning. I would highly rate the university especially for the course, as it provides too much flexibility where I can pursue my own interests and choose subjects on my own. Germany provides a good platform for starting and building a career in Bioinformatics. I am highly satisfied with the course and the opportunity that the university provides, which align perfectly with my interests and motivation.
Likes (Public transportation): The city is well connected by buses. The buses are clean and frequent. They are quite affordable and convenient. Along with the university registration we get a Deutschland ticket, where one can take an unlimited number of rides through the city bus lines. The city is also well connected by train services, both high-speed (ICE) and regional trains.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): Post study jobs are a bit tricky in Gottingen. There are not many industries located in Göttingen for the job roles especially for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. However there are some good companies like Evotec and Sartorius that offer some permanent positions. There are some jobs in the University Medical Centre, Max Planck Institute. They offer various roles like Research assistant, Bioinformatician or research scientist.

It's one of the best places to study in Germany for a student.
Tips: The city is very student friendly with a huge multiethnic international student body. The faculty is varied and very big, especially for life sciences. There's a very active student association, a sizeable amount of student accommodation options as well.
Likes (Indian Food): There are a lot of good Indian restaurants that are spread out all over the town. Some offer student discounts. The quality of food is very good, and in most places nearly the same as what you'd get back home in terms of flavour. The prices are comparatively reasonable.
Dislikes (Internships): The internship market here is very saturated for most streams. Although you can land internships, those will mostly be academic. An industry or a hybrid internship is very competitive. Fluent German is almost a default expectation and non-German speakers will struggle even more.

Tips: Göttingen is known as a university city, so it's full of students which offers you many opportunities in many ways, in terms of making new international friends and joining different study clubs or organisations, etc. People from this city are not very conservative, and you can easily adapt to the culture and people over here. Due to the many universities, the number of students (youth) is more so it makes a big difference in making your cultural difference wide, as there are many international students and also students from different parts of Germany. Talking about scholarship, personally, I didn't receive any scholarship. But one can apply for Deutschland stipendium or Niedersachsen stipendium. I'm pretty much satisfied with this university in terms of academia, however I feel a lack of cultural events or inter department competitions. I'm loving the student life in Germany, as you can develop many skills, grow yourself more, deepen your knowledge in your area of interest, and at the same time can earn money by doing part time or mini jobs.
Likes (Quality of faculty): All faculty members in every department are very experienced and experts in their own field. They are very friendly and humble, always open to discussions and clarifying our doubts. Talking about particularly my field, we have lectures from experts in the field which make the whole module way more informative and give deep insights into that topic. Our teaching faculty members are from different nationalities, and I would say it's pretty much diverse.
Dislikes (Public transportation): As this city is relatively smaller than other cities, there are only bus options, whereas other cities have trams, ubahn, Sbahn, metro, etc. Even though each part of the city is well connected to each other, due to less options of transport it takes quite a long time to reach shorter distances. For students, we get a Deutschland ticket so we don't have to pay anything for any transportation.

Transformation and learning something new.
Tips: You will see cultural differences but you will get adjusted. It's best if you know how to cook for your meals. If your course requires you to finish a certain level of German or English level try to finish and submit it as soon as you can. You will have stress free time during university. I love my university and all the students and professors are pretty cool.
Likes (Safety): I have travelled and have walked around at midnight. It's a pretty safe and friendly small city and less tourists. There is an international office where you can go and talk about your difficulties and they actually care and try to help you out. The city is quite peaceful.
Dislikes (Quality of faculty): Faculty are good. But for my course, I see them for two to three classes and I don't see them again but you can always contact them through email. And I really love how we get hands on experience in the wed labs and exposure to different labs in the city.

Tips: There is always a cultural shift when a student moves abroad. But it actually helps you grow to be a good and confident person during your career. I didn't have any scholarships, but there are a few where students can apply, such as Deutschland Stipendium, where you get 300 euros per month. I really like my programme, it's research oriented and well established. There are many better programs, where you can choose a different career path than being narrowed down to one topic.

University of Gottingen is good.
Tips: I think there's a shift in mindset when one moves abroad and develops a network of people from different countries. This helps broaden perspectives. The DAAD scholarship gives 800 euros per month as well as round flight tickets and health insurance. I would definitely recommend the University of Gottingen.
Likes (Value for money): The tuition fee is very minimal in public universities in Germany. It was about 250 euros when I was studying there. This "tuition fee" goes towards your public transport allowance, student union membership, as well as subsidised food in the canteens.
Dislikes (Permanent Immigration): Germany is open in terms of visa access. It is very difficult to get a job if you do not have native fluency in German and do not have a local network to help you get jobs. There is also a growing anti-immigrant sentiment. Germany is great to live in for a few years and get a good education. But permanent immigration opportunities are a bit difficult to come across.

Life in Germany: A quiet world.
Tips: The cultural shift is something huge that I had to go through. It is very quiet here which was definitely a surprise to me. But the course coordinator was more than welcoming to us and made the local bureaucracy very easy. The course is really good and prepares everyone for the outer world.
Likes (Value for money): For my course, there was a stipend that every student received each month. This stipend is enough to cover the insurance and the living costs. It was also covered by travel expenses when I went around Europe and also back home. The university also increased the stipend once due to inflation and it helped.
Dislikes (Indian Food): There are a lot of Indian restaurants but the food is really Europeanized and hence doesn't really taste like it does back home. The prices are okay ish one meal can be somewhere around 20 euros now. I like to cook food and hence prefer eating inside only.

Tips: Things students should know before coming here -
Knowledge of the German language is crucial, even if your course is in English. Acclimating to a new culture takes time. Germans can be different from Indians; they're less social and follow rules to an immense degree. Niedersachsen scholarship and the Deutschlandstipendium are available for students. Overall, I am satisfied with my experiences.
Likes (Value for money): There are no tuition fees because the University of Göttingen (also known as The Georg-August University) is a public university. Public universities do not charge tuition. Students need to cover accommodation, health insurance, and living expenses. Groceries cost roughly 180-200 euros a month. Statutory health insurance is 144 euros, and the average rent is 300 euros. Public transport is free.
Dislikes (Permanent Immigration): There is a finding work visa available after graduation which is quite helpful. Germany is generally pro immigrant making it easier to settle here. However it's important to note that German language proficiency is crucial for this. I would like to immigrate permanently if given the opportunity.

A place for quality distance learning for professional and personal growth.
Tips: I have changed from an introvert to an extrovert. There was a cultural shift and I got adjusted to it. Having at least B1 knowledge of the German language is recommended before you go to any University in Germany. I have availed scholarship for my masters' thesis. I spoke with my mentor and he did allow me to get a scholarship for my thesis. It was 1000 Euros per month for 6 months only. Overall, I am satisfied with the course, the university, and the country. I have learned a lot of lessons and traveling to a different place changed me as a whole person and I liked the change.
Likes (Safety): The lawns are very strict there at the University. The police would be patrolling during the night. Lost and found, mental health, and job & student support were the other facilities that were provided for the student's safety. I did not face any bad experiences in the city. I had a good experience as it was a student city.
Dislikes (Indian Food): I studied in a very small town. There were only 3 to 4 Indian restaurants. Out of them only 1 or 2 had affordable pricing as students but still, I could not afford to eat there daily as it would be expensive for a monthly budget. I prefer to cook myself for healthy purposes and due to my expense constraints.

Tips: The transition to the cultural life here was easy. The city is international in its nature with several opportunities for students to interact with students and faculty from all across the world. The Lower Saxony Scholarship and the Germany Scholarship are two options that the students can opt for. Overall, I'm happy with the faculty, the city and the university.
Likes (Quality of faculty): The faculty at the Centre for Modern Indian Studies is absolutely brilliant. Some of the leading figures of labour history at the moment work here. The academic environment is rigorous. We're taught how to discern complex, often inaccessible texts. The faculty is also diverse in its nature, both on the basis of their areas of specialisation and where they come from.
Dislikes (Internships): Regular internship fairs are organised both by the Centre for Modern Indian Studies and the University of Göttingen. Career Planning Workshops and Grant Writing Workshops also take place. The internship opportunities, however, become a bit scarce if you don't speak German. You can get credit transfers for internships or your work experience.

Best university, perfect for student life and excellent faculty.
Tips: The University of Gottingen is good. The academic culture and the exam pattern are different than in India, and you have to be self-motivated. The faculty and staff are really approachable, and if you put in the effort, you will be successful. German is mandatory if you plan to stay in Germany long term, but not while you're at the University of Gottingen, as long as the courses are international. The University of Gottingen isn't perfect, but it’s a great place to study.
