Founded in 1743, Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg is a research university and one of the largest universities in Germany. By 1818, this university acquired a vast number of buildings such as the Schloss and the Schlossgarten. The name of this university has been borrowed from this university's first founder Friedrich, who was Margrave of Brandenburg-Bayreuth and its benefactor Christian Frederick Charles Alexander, who was Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach.

It also has 24 Interdisciplinary Centres, 585 professors, 3,516 members of research staff, and 2,315 members of administrative staff.
This university has a library system that goes by the name University Library Erlangen-Nürnberg. It is also a regional library for the Central Franconia region. With an academic universal library, Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg offers its users a grade variety of specialized literature from different faculties and related services. The library comprises of more than 5 million volumes. It is also known to be Bavaria's largest library.
Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg also specializes in several areas of research - New Materials and Processes, Optics and Optical Technologies, Molecular Life Science and Medicine, Health Technology, Electronics, Information and Communication, Energy, Environment and Climate, Language, Culture, Region, Cohesion, Transformation, and Innovation in Law and Economics. This university also has a branch campus in Busan in the Republic of Korea.

This university also has a number of gardens, collections and museums - Antique and Classical Collection, Astronomical collection, Botanical collection, Botanical Garden, Scented Garden, Scented Garden, Computer Technology Collection Erlangen, Ethnological Collection, Geoscience Collection, History of School Education Collection, Martius Pharmacognostic Collection, Medical Collection, Medical Moulage Collection, Musical Instrument Collection, Prehistory and Protohistory Collection and Zoological Collection.
Some of its notable alumni and professors include MP3 audio codec developer Karlheinz Brandenburg, former Siemens AG CEO Heinrich von Pierer, Harald Zur Hausen who won Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, former First Lady of Lithuania Alma Adamkien, renowned Petrologist Erik Flugel, former Chancellor of Germany Ludwig Erhard, World Chess Champion Emmy Noether who also has a maths theorem after her name known as the Noether's theorem, and Emanuel Lasker who was a former world chess champion, mathematician and philosopher.
