The Hamburg University's opened in the year 1919, when the Hamburg Parliament passed a resolution to establish a university in the region. It became the first democratically founded university in Germany. Its roots, however, can be traced as far back as 1613 and the operations of the Akademisches Gymnasium, an institution which operated until 1833, and offered a "general lecture series" to individuals interested in educating themselves on a wide range of topics.
