What Do Toppers Say About dMAT Mock Tests?
Mock tests can help candidates understand the dMAT question format and the way the examination is divided into different sections. In their interviews with Shiksha, Pragyan Pant and Sheikh Asad Ghouse shared how they used mock tests during their preparation.
Pragyan Pant: Attempt at Least 4 to 5 Mock Tests
Pragyan Pant scored 340 out of 400 in dMAT. He said that he could attempt only two to three mock tests because of limited preparation time. However, he recommended that candidates attempt at least four to five mocks.
He also advised candidates to review their performance after every mock test and work on the sections where they are making mistakes.
"If someone is going to give mocks, they should be giving at least 4 to 5. It depends, you know, if you are giving mocks and you are improving... you should learn from your mistakes from every mock."
According to Pragyan, candidates should practise a weak section again before attempting another mock. For example, if a candidate is not performing well in Figure Sequences, they should practise more questions from that topic and then take another mock test.
Sheikh Asad Ghouse: Practise as Many Mock Tests as Possible
Sheikh Asad Ghouse scored 388 out of 400, including a perfect 200 out of 200 in the Core Module. He said that mock tests were his main preparation resource. He attempted around 15 mock tests from different sources, including the dMAT website and Shiksha.
He also recommended attempting mock tests from different sources because each paper can offer a different type of practice.
"The Shiksha dMAT mock tests were really good... I got, like, around 10 mock tests, and all of them helped me a lot, because all of them were different in their own way."
Asad further advised candidates to attempt as many mock tests as their preparation time allows. He said that regular practice helps candidates understand the exam pattern, subjects and different sections.
What Can Candidates Learn from Their Experiences?
The experiences of both toppers show that candidates should not focus only on the number of mock tests they attempt. They should also review their mistakes and practise the question types they find difficult.
| Topper | dMAT Score | Mock Test Experience | Advice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pragyan Pant | 340/400 | Attempted 2 to 3 mock tests | Attempt at least 4 to 5 mocks and learn from mistakes |
| Sheikh Asad Ghouse | 388/400 | Attempted around 15 mock tests, including around 10 Shiksha mocks | Practise as many mocks as possible from different sources |
dMAT Mock Test 2027 Exam Pattern
Before attempting a dMAT practice test, it is important to understand how the actual examination is organised. The dMAT has a Core Module and a Subject Module. The official dMAT exam pattern has 90 minutes for each module, with a 30-minute break between them.
| Module/Section |
Tasks |
Time |
|---|---|---|
| Figure Sequences |
20 |
25 minutes |
| Mathematical Equations |

30 minutes |
| General Academic/Subject Module |
Varies by module |
90 minutes |
The official preparatory material states that candidates cannot take notes during the dMAT. This makes it important to practise the Core Module in conditions that resemble the real test rather than relying on rough work.
dMAT Mock Test for Core Module
The dMAT Core Module consists of three sections: Figure Sequences, Mathematical Equations and Latin Squares. Candidates should practise all three question types before appearing for the examination.
The following table shows the task-wise distribution and time based on the dMAT mock test preparation pattern.
| Core Module Section | Number of Tasks | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Figure Sequences | 20 | 25 minutes |
| Mathematical Equations | 20 | 25 minutes |
| Latin Squares | 16 | 20 minutes |
| Total | 56 | 90 minutes |
There are three different question types in the Core Module. Candidates should understand the basic rules of each section and then practise solving questions within the given time.
1. Figure Sequences
Figure Sequences questions test a candidate's ability to identify patterns in a series of figures. Candidates may have to identify changes in the position, colour, direction or rotation of different shapes.
Pragyan Pant advised candidates to practise different types of questions instead of relying on a few familiar patterns. Regular practice can help candidates identify changes in figures more quickly.
2. Mathematical Equations
Mathematical Equations test numerical and analytical reasoning. Candidates are given a set of equations and have to find the missing values or solve for the unknown variables.
Pragyan said that some equation questions in the actual exam were more difficult than he had expected. He recalled questions involving multiple variables and equations that became quadratic. He also highlighted that candidates must solve these questions mentally because the exam does not provide rough sheets.
"The main problem of dMAT is that you have to do it mentally. You are not given any scratch papers."
Sheikh Asad also recommended practising mathematical questions because mental calculations can take more time without pen and paper.
3. Latin Squares
Latin Squares questions are similar to Sudoku puzzles. Candidates are given a grid with letters or symbols and have to complete the missing cells while following the row and column rules.
dMAT Sample Questions with Answers
Practising dMAT sample questions before attempting a full mock test helps you understand the logic behind each task type. The examples below are practice questions based on the published dMAT task formats and are not questions reproduced from an actual examination.
Figure Sequences dMAT Sample Question
Consider a 3×3 grid in which a black circle moves one position at a time along the outer boundary:
| ● |
□ |
□ |
| □ |
□ |
□ |
| □ |
□ |
□ |
In the next two figures, the circle moves one position clockwise along the boundary.
Which position should the circle occupy next?
- A. Middle-right
- B. Bottom-right
- C. Centre
- D. Middle-left
Answer: A. Middle-right
Explanation: The circle follows the outer boundary rather than moving through the centre. Identifying the movement rule allows the next position to be predicted.
Mathematical Equations Sample Question for dMAT exam
Solve the following equations:
2 × A = B
B + 4 = C
C − A = 8
What is the value of A?
- A. 2
- B. 4
- C. 6
- D. 8
Answer: B. 4
Explanation: From the first equation, B = 2A. Therefore, C = 2A + 4. Substituting this into the third equation gives 2A + 4 − A = 8, so A = 4.
Latin Squares Sample Question
In a 5×5 Latin Square, each of the letters A, B, C, D and E must occur once in every row and once in every column.
| A |
B |
C |
D |
E |
| B |
C |
D |
E |
A |
| C |
D |
E |
A |
B |
| D |
E |
A |
B |
? |
| E |
A |
B |
C |
D |
What should replace the question mark?
- A. A
- B. B
- C. C
- D. E
Answer: C. C
Explanation: The fourth row already contains D, E, A, and B. Therefore, C is the only missing letter. The fifth column also contains E, A, B and D, confirming that C is the only possible answer.
dMAT Subject Module Mock Test for Indian Students
The dMAT Subject Module tests a candidate's ability to understand information and apply it to solve academic problems. Candidates may be given a paragraph or a set of information, followed by questions based on it. The questions are not limited to direct information from the given paragraph. Candidates may also have to use logical reasoning and analyse the information before selecting an answer.
Pragyan Pant said that candidates should practise questions based on unfamiliar topics. He explained that the General Academic Module may include information that candidates have not studied before.
"The best thing would be to train upon that. Like, if you get an unseen topic, how would you score well in that?"
Sheikh Asad Ghouse also shared that the Subject Module can be unpredictable. During his exam, he came across questions related to stock markets and stock exchanges, which he had not prepared for. He advised candidates not to depend on one particular topic appearing in the exam. Instead, they should practise understanding new information and applying logic to answer questions.
How to Practise for the dMAT Subject Module?
Candidates can follow these tips while attempting the GAM mock tests:
- Read the given paragraph or information carefully before answering.
- Identify the important points and relationships in the given information.
- Practise questions based on unfamiliar academic topics.
- Do not depend only on direct answers from the paragraph.
- Use logical reasoning to answer questions that require further analysis.
- Practise multiple-choice questions and use the elimination method where required.
How to Take a dMAT Mock Test Effectively?
Candidates should attempt mock tests under conditions similar to the actual examination. This will help them understand the time limits and practise solving questions without using rough sheets.
Follow the steps below while attempting a dMAT mock test:
- Set a timer: Follow the time limit for each section. Do not solve questions without a time limit.
- Avoid rough work: Practise solving mathematical and reasoning questions mentally. Do not depend on pen and paper.
- Complete the mock test: Attempt the full mock before checking the answer key.
- Review your mistakes: Identify the questions where you made mistakes or took too much time.
- Practise weak sections: Work on topics where your performance is low. Attempt similar questions again.
- Take another mock: Check whether your speed and accuracy have improved after practising.
Pragyan Pant also advised candidates to practise every question under a timer. According to him, candidates should improve their speed while solving questions mentally.
"Whenever you're practicing, make sure you're doing it under a timer. Make sure you're timing yourself every time."
