Programmes with admission restrictions

For some degree programmes receive more applications than there are study places. These programmes are in high demand and thus, have restrictions on admission and places are awarded through selection procedures based on fixed criteria. The selection procedures also depend on where you come from and which degree programme you are applying for.

What are the eligibility requirements?

Study places for an applicant group are allocated on the basis of a ‘quota’ for international students. At Leipzig, this quota is:

• Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Veterinary Medicine: 5% of available study places
• Other programmes with admission restrictions: 10% of available study places.

 

General Academic Requirements

International applicants with a suitable higher education entrance qualification and the required language skill can apply to undergraduate courses. A student’s foreign educational qualification must be recognised in Germany. Students must check this in the Anabin database.

To secure admission to PG courses, students need to have a bachelor’s degree. Students also need to check whether their foreign educational qualification is recognised in Germany. They may check this in the Anabin database.

 

Eligibility requirements for Indian students

Special regulations apply to Indian applicants of different subjects—for example, Dentistry, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, Psychology, Management Science, Economics, and Law. More details can be found on the respective course pages of the university.

 

German and English Language Requirements

Most UG degree programs in Leipzig University are taught in the German language. Knowledge of the German language must be at least equivalent to the C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). However, a few courses are offered in the English language as well. To pursue courses in the English language, students need to give proof of proficiency in the English language. Details of these documents should be attached as proof with the relevant subject during admission.

Similar to undergraduate programs, very few PG courses are offered in English. Thus, knowledge of the German language must be at least equivalent to the C1 level of the CEFR. To pursue courses in the English language, students need to submit proof of proficiency in the English language. The ECTS credits of students must be 120.

Application & Tuition Fees

Is there any application fees?

As international applicants need to apply via the Uni-assist website, the application fee for the first course of study is EUR 75, and for every additional course application costs EUR 30. The application fee is non-refundable.

What is the fee structure of courses offered by the university?

Currently, Leipzig University does not charge tuition fees for a student’s first degree. However, in certain cases, students may be required to pay fees for a second degree or for exceeding the standard period of study by too long. Certain fees are also charged for some special courses and the DSH course. All applicants, including international and doctoral students, need to pay the semester fee before the start of each semester. In addition to this semester fee, the university levies tuition fees for long-term students and for second undergraduate degrees. The tuition fee for Second Undergraduate Degrees is EUR 350 per semester and for Long-Term Students is EUR 500 per semester, for the academic year 2021-22.

Is there any scholarship or financial aid available for international students?

Leipzig University offers scholarships to students with merit standings. The most well-known scholarships are offered by various foundations and dedicated organisations to promote young talent. The details of the different scholarships available at the university are given below:

Admission Process

When do the admissions start?

Leipzig offers admission mainly in the summer and winter semesters. Some programs may be open for admission in both the semester, while the others have a specific intake. Here are some deadlines that international applicants must note before beginning their application process:

What is the application process?

The university has various application procedures. The correct application procedure depends on your nationality, academic qualifications and the desired degree programme. Applicants with a foreign educational qualification need to apply via the Uni-assist application portal only.

 

Applying via Uni-assist

Firstly, you need to register with the Uni-assist application portal: https://www.uni-assist.de/en/. Then, log in to the uni-assist application portal using your username and password and follow these steps:

• Set up an application in the application portal by clicking on search study offers and select the semester, Leipzig University, the desired degree and the intended course of studies.
• Run the search to be shown degree courses that match your criteria. Select one of these. Set up an application for that degree course.
• Answer the questions and fill in details as required.
• Once this is completed, submit the application electronically.

Uni-assist forwards successful applications that meet the formal requirements to the university’s International Centre. Then, the university will send you login details for its AlmaWeb study portal by email. In the email, you will find an electronic letter of admission or rejection after the application has been processed.

What are the chances to get into this university?

For programmes with no admission restrictions, you will be admitted if you fulfil the formal admission requirements and successfully apply on time and in the prescribed manner. However, the restricted courses have a rigorous selections process based on two main criteria:

• Grade of higher education entrance qualification (HZB): Your chances of getting admission are high if you score good marks in HZB compared to other applicants.
• Nationality: In every specialist course per country, only three applicants can get admission, and for a large country like Germany, only six applicants can get admission.

If two or more candidates are equally eligible, admission is decided by drawing lots. An aptitude test (Eignungsfeststellungsprüfung) may be required for some degree programmes. 

How many Indian/international students are studying at the university?

Leipzig University supports not only foreign scholars and students but also alumni in their internationalization projects. More than 30,000 students are currently enrolled in the university and each year, over 7,000 students begin their studies here.  In winter term 2017, out of its 28,797 students about 11% or 3,174 were international students. In 2019-20, the university enrolled 31,088 students, including 3,652 foreign students from all over the world.

Can I work while studying here?

Yes, international students can work while studying at Leipzig University under the following conditions:

• A non-EU citizen can work 120 full days or 240 half-days per year while studying.
• All these 120 full- or 240 half-days must be approved by a local Foreigner’s Authority.

Campuses & Accommodation

How many colleges and campuses does the university have?

Leipzig’s urban campus comprises 38 locations campus in the heart of the city. It has been closely linked to life in Leipzig as a city of culture, trade, sport and media. With the centuries-old University Library, the university archives, the art collections and the Institute of German Literature, the university permanently enriches cultural life in the city.

Is on-campus housing available?

The University of Leipzig does provide housing opportunities for its students but the dormitories are not directly on-campus. These are scattered around the whole city, while some are closer to the centre, the others are further away. Students get their own room but have to share a kitchen and bathroom, just like in a Wohngemeinschaft (WG) or living community. All rooms are furnished but the rents vary. Housing contracts are usually signed for a year minimum. Students can apply for students housing here: www.studentenwerk-leipzig.de/en/housing.
