Tips for choosing a college for students looking to pursue an education in the US

Make a smart college choice in US

The most crucial point of studying abroad is choosing a college. The colleges you decide define your career. So it is important to remember you must choose a college with certain key factors.

Listed below are seven tips that would make this easier:

  • College rankings: Colleges are rated on the basis of highest (and lowest) acceptance rate, top-public schools, best nursing programs, most international students, value for money, etc by organizations like US News & World Report, Forbes and Princeton rate. These ratings are done without any bias and provide the students with a fair idea about how the college is.
  • Size of a college: There are good colleges in both sizes large and small. The most important thing is to make you feel comfortable. It is important to decide where you want to study and what kind of environment would you prefer? A small college where you will know everyone or in a college where the student strength is approximately 50,000.
  • Campus activities: A campus is known by the activities it holds. A 'happening' college is a college where film festivals, cafes, libraries, active extracurricular events, fraternities, student clubs, fitness facilities, sports are conducted.

  • Facilities: A good college offers a perfect academic environment, social environment, athletic and other extracurricular opportunities, urban or rural location, placements, good faculty etc. It will provide the students with maximum personal growth and development.
  • Location: It is important to decide the kind or region you would like to study in. Many of the US institutions are located in or near cities; however, many more are located in small towns and other settings.
  • Financial Factors: This is one of the most important factors for choosing a college. You must consider the finances required for tuition, room, and board (the cost to stay in the dormitories and to eat in the dining halls), books, fees, and personal expenses. Students can also apply for loans if they want to.
  • Academic Requirement: Everything boils down to this. The college should offer a study environment and expertise in your chosen field.
