McGill University History
A merchant James McGill's bequest established McGill University in 1813 as the University of McGill College. James McGill wrote a will between 1811 and 1813 leaving a 19-hectare (47-acre) tract of rural land and approximately GBP 10,000 to the Royal Institute for the Advancement of Learning. James McGill's will clearly mentioned that land and funds left by him to RIAL should be used for the formation of a University or College for the purpose of education and advanced learning. McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada was founded in 1821 by the Royal Charter In 1829, Montreal Medical Institution became McGill College's first academic unit and Canada's first medical school.
Canada's first medical degree, i.e., Doctorate of Medicine was awarded by the Faculty of Medicine of McGill College in 1833. In 1843, the Faculty of Art was formed in the newly built Arts building and East Wing. In 1848, the Faculty of Law was founded and is the oldest of its kind in Canada and in 1896, the McGill School of Architecture was founded and it was the second school of architecture in Canada. Donald Smith started women's education at McGill in 1884 by funding separate lectures by university staff members for women. In 1899, a residential college for women was opened in McGill known as the Royal Victoria College.
