Stanford Updates Flag, Banner Policy For Student Residences
Study in US: Stanford has reversed a previous rule for the student residents and now they are allowed to hang banners and flags outside their windows.
The resident fellows of Stanford University have received an email to reverse a rule against hanging flags and banners outside their windows.
Stanford’s “Free Expression” website is now updated and on banners and posters it states, “residents may place banners, flags, or signage on the inside or outside of window(s) and/or on or over balcony railings of their assigned room or unit provided all occupants of the assigned room or unit concur.”
Vice Provost for Student Affairs Michele Rasmussem said in a mail, "Since the fall, Res Ed and R&DE have received feedback that the different rules for items displayed on the interior and exterior windows of student residences were confusing in light of Stanford’s freedom of expression values."
Professor Bernie Meyler, special adviser to the provost on university speech worked with ASSU representatives and administrators to make the decision.
However, students say that even after the ban was imposed in September, flags have been hanging at students' windows for months.
Zuha Hassen ’28 said, “If you walk around campus, there’s already flags of different countries up on people’s rooms. They might as well. It’s a freedom of speech.”
