University Of Bath Offers ABSW Media Fellowships For Scientists And Engineers

ABSW Media Fellowships is offering scientists and engineers of the University Of Bath a unique opportunity to work at leading UK media outlets. The last date to apply for the fellowships is February 28, 2025.
Study in UK: The University Of Bath has announced that applications are open for the 2025 Association of British Science Writers (ABSW) Media Fellowship scheme.
The fellowship is a great opportunity for the scientists and engineers at the University of Bath to work in the leading UK media outlet and gain first-hand experience in reporting. It will provide them the confidence to engage with media in the future. Two fellows will be chosen from Bath in 2025. ESRC and EPSRC Impact Acceleration Accounts have jointly funded the fellowship.
"The ABSW Media Fellowships provide a unique opportunity for practising scientists, clinicians, and engineers to spend two-to-six-weeks working at the heart of a media outlet such as the Guardian, BBC Breakfast or the New Scientist," says the official statement of the university.
It will help the fellows to learn to tackle mistrust and misrepresentation, give them the confidence to engage with the media, bridge the gap between scientists and journalists, and build understanding between society and science.
ABSW Media Fellowships Details
Last year, Bath selected two media fellows - Dr Abbie Jordan, from the Centre for Pain Research in the Department of Psychology and Professor Tiffany Taylor, from the Milner Centre of Evolution in the Department of Life Sciences.
Dr Jordan said, "My placement with BBC Science Focus was an incredible opportunity to develop my science communication skills, from writing to tight deadlines to crafting engaging stories for a broad audience. The induction to science media provided by the Association for British Science Writers offered a valuable crash course in the field, as well as a sense of peer support throughout the placement. I'm also incredibly grateful to the University of Bath for making this experience possible. It was an invaluable step in learning how to bring science to life for the public."
Both of them will discuss their experiences of taking part in this fellowship last year at an upcoming Media Masterclass event on Feb 12, 2025. The event will be hybrid and it will be open to all staff.
