University Of Mary Washington Student Gets Taste Of Europe During Anthropology Study Abroad Trip

Ariana Adamek, a senior at the University of Mary Washington went to Europe for a study abroad trip. Now she is back to the university and sharing her experiences with the campus community.
Study in US: Ariana Adamek, a senior student at the University of Mary Washington went on a study abroad trip to Europe where she deepened her understanding of the community, culture and food.
The course titled “Tasting Culture: Nordic and Mediterranean Food, Tradition and Nutrition”. She got the opportunity to immerse herself in the customs and culinary flavours of both Denmark and Greece. She went to Europe for one month in the Summer of 2024.
“As an anthropology and theatre major, I’m so grateful for the opportunity to observe and participate in other cultures firsthand. This trip allowed me to make connections with many unique students and incredible professors. It’s something I’ll never forget," said Adamek.
“One of my favorite aspects of the class was the visits to local businesses in both Greece and Denmark. We visited a winery, an apiary, bakeries and other restaurants, and I was pleasantly surprised by how passionate everyone was about what they were doing and how inviting they were to teach us about them," added Adamek.
UMW Anthropology Student Trip To Europe: More Details
She started her Europe trip from Greece and explored the history and significance of the Greek festivities and food.
UMW Anthropology Professor Laura Mentore said, "A society’s most beloved dishes are a window into their values and role in the bigger picture story of humanity. That’s because food is more than mere sustenance. Everywhere we look, food is a symbol, and it can be deliciously fun to figure out what those symbols stand for.”

UMW President Troy Paino spoke about his career with Bill Freehling, host of the Fredericksburg Advance’s Biz Beat Banter podcast.
"Education is an opportunity to invest in other people and to be a part of an enterprise that at its core is hope. You’re dealing with young people at a stage of life where it’s all before them," he said.
UMW Dean of Admissions and Associate Vice President Melissa Yakabouski, Professor of Geography Steve Hanna, and Professor of Communication Anand Rao also shared experiences and insights on podcasts.
