Pre departure checklist for students going to US

It is a well-known fact that USA hosts more Indian students than any other country in the world, a number more than 100,000. In fact, overseas students comprise approximately 4 percent of the total undergraduates at US Universities and colleges. Every year thousands of Indian students leave their home to pursue the American dream as they believe that a US education would prepare them for a bright future.  However, there are certain pre-departure pointers that students need to keep in mind before going to the US to study.

Right before leaving, students need to make a checklist of important documents that they need to carry with them through immigration. These must be taken in their hand baggage with a copied set in their luggage. These documents include:

1. Passport with valid visa

2. I 20 (Internet receipt verifying SEVIS fee payment)

3. University offer letter & Accommodation Proof

4. All Original Academic Qualifications certificates

5. It is also advisable to carry a chest X-ray & Immunization Certificate

6. Proof of finance, Affidavit and CA statement

7. University address and contact details

8. Medical Health Insurance for USA

It is recommended that students spend at least the first year of their programme staying at the campus accommodation. University/ college accommodation is safe and secure and one is next to their campus at all times and this provides them with a richer experience.  Students must also check their respective University’s payment procedure and schedule. Generally, accommodation and tuition fees are payable at the beginning of each term. Payment schedules can be found on the respective University’s website. The first month demands more financial outlay than any other single period. An additional USD 2000 should be available to meet these expenses.

Before arriving at the US, students need to ensure that they have made prior arrangement with their respective university, in case they have pick-up services. Students must also download directions to the University in case they do not have pick-up services and make arrangements as to how to reach the university.  When students finally arrive at their University or college they must check in with International Student Services with their immigration documents. Enrolment is another important thing that students need to do upon arrival. Based on this students will be given their respective courses and combinations. Students are also advised to attend their Orientation. This will give them a chance to make friends and learn more about their respective University or college.
